Lpg?

Featured Replies

Hey there folks.

Does anyone on here have an LPG conversion on their felly?

How DIY-able would it be to get a cheap-ish second hand kit off ebay and fit it?

Obviously there would need to be some alterations to the system fittings etc depending what it was previously used on.

What alterations would need to be done to the car? How would the changeover from petrol to LPG work? How would the ECU handle it running on LPG without injecting the fuel itself.

One of the kits I looked at had come off an old Nissan Primera which I think will have had single point fuel injection judging by the age of the kit.

I suppose my main reasons behind it are the cheaper running costs but mainly the increased range. I'm guessing with one of these installed and a 60 liter tank you could more than double the range on the car? This would mean been able to travel all the way up to see my mum on the isle of skye without a refuel stop!

I do not know the answers to your questions; but I WOULD question you doing it yourself, especially with a 2nd hand kit off of Ebay.

LPG systems are VERY dangerous to play with if you do not know what you are doing; I personally would never go near a car that had one unless I knew it was a factory or approved mechanic fitted.

My brother is a fireman and he has seen a lot of burnt out cars since the regulations were loosened on LPG.

yes i have lpg conversion :)

Here in Turkey most of the felicia owners(also others) converted their cars to LPG because of very very high gasoline prices.

i have 1.3l 43kw engine not a fuel injected one so its very easy to convert a lpg system.

my tank is 40liter located in spare tyre place in the trunk. so i can use evrey part of my trunk like before.

in sequential gas injection systems LPG ecu acts as a piggyback unit also some brands are capable of acting like standalone.

they pick up the injection pulse from gasoline injectors process it and use this for triggering LPG injectors simultaneously.

changeover between LPG and gasoline is very smooth practically you can not feel it.

cold start is always with gasoline the changeover occurs when coolant tempreture reaches an adjustable value in lpg ecu.

at that point gasoline injectors are no more triggered but their pulse is used by lpg ecu to calculate the lpg injcetors pulsewidth. closed loop lambda control and any other sensor outputs are monitored by stock engine ecu any corrections simultaneously used by lpg ecu.

stock ecu always thinks that engine is running with gasoline, so no problem in theory :D

the most common problems here in Turkey is about workmanship. and the other one is calibration settings.

if there was a calibration or workmanship problem usually emission control lamp came up. if you ignore it and continue using the car sometime later stock engine ecu changes the Long Term Fuel Trims. so it becames a problem to coldstart the car.(because LTFT values learned LPG based but engine coldstarts with gasoline)

for your spi felica its not DIY able in my opinion you need old system like in my felicia.

single point systems are also tend to backfire from intake manifold

so anyway :) i know my english writing skills are not so good but i think you now have some idea about sequential lpg injection.

AhmetH, your English is very good; and a very useful posting.

I do not know how many Fellys get LPG converted here, I would guess very few; but people either do not realise, or dont stop to think if the engine materials are suitable for conversion.

I know of several makes, including a wide range of Toyota cars, that are not suitable for conversion, but people get them done anyway; the results are always the same, a year or two later the engine is DEAD. The components are not suited to the much higher temperatures of LPG combustion and melt (valves, valve guides, pistons, piston rings etc).

It is not just people either, one of the London Boroughs had it's fleet of cars & vans converted and EVERY SINGLE TOYOTA ENGINE WAS DESTROYED. (This was about 2002-3)

When I have the Volvo XC70 it had a LPG conversion and I had to declare it to get Insurance. I had to send them a copy of the certificate which stated it had been fitted at an approved centre. The certificate is also numbered. No certificate = No Insurance. As stated home fitted jobbies a no no

Fair does then!

It wouldn't be worth getting a kit fitted properly as it would cost more than the car is worth!

If only there was a bigger fuel tank on the felly I wouldn't mind so much.

I will definitely consider it for my next car if it is a air bit newer etc though.

And thank you Ahmet your post was very useful and I thought your english was fantastic!

I have noticed the amount of LPG converted cars in Turkey before and it seemed there were more running on LPG than on Petrol!

If I were to DIY I would get it checked by a mechanic etc as I wouldn't feel happy driving it if it hadn't been at least checked by someone who knows what they're doing!

Phil

I bought a Range Rover that had a DIY (I think Kar Gas) system. Before use you just take it to a LPG specialist who check the work and can set the system up for you.

An insurance friendly certificate costs between £40 and £60 depending on garage.

My Range Rover has a simple open loop single mixer type system. It has a mixer attached to the afm and uses the natural "vacuum" to draw LPG into the intake.

The electronic unit switches off the fuel pump and fuel in jectors, whilst injector emulators ensure that the ecu is happy. As usual, the LPG vapourisor is piped into the coolant circuit, drive a mile or so, switch to gas, blip throttle to 1800 rpm and the unit automatically switches to LPG.

Quite simple and allows my to run a stonking v8 in a truck shaped like a fridge with the equivilant of 28 mpg....

I seem to remember reading somewhere on the internet that the spi felicia engine isn't ideal for LPG conversion, but the mpi is. Not sure where I read it but I guess google may help.

Have you considered specifically looking for a car that's already been converted. May be cheaper than the cost of a similar car + conversion.

hi

i got my fun converted at dunball in brigwater in somerset,it wasn.t cheap but i get a good mileage allowance from my company and it was worth it as it paid for itself in ayear. it cost approx 1800 pounds but it was guaranteed for two years and i have never had problems since.the fun doesnt return a very good mpg on petrol but is obviously much better on lpg at 55p a litre.i have to tell the insurance companies eg asda and a couple others that i have used and they need to see the certificate. i will certainly get my next car done.
