PS3 slimline HELPPPP!!!!!

Featured Replies

I have just bought the new slimline... back ground is my son already has the 60Gb old version upstairs in his bedroom, so i was mainly getting this for media player capabilities in the living room, as well as the odd lan party lol.

I have two issues at the moment, but first a little back ground to the setup in living room:

TV: Samsung Series 6 LCD 46" 100Hz Full HD - the one with the rose effect bezel

Connection: Phillips 1mtr gold plated connector HDMI - it says 1080P compatable on box!

Obviously: PS3 slimline 120Gb version ;)

1st issue - Output resolution problem:

Within the XMB if i select all formats, incluing the 1080p output i get what can only be described as snow effect and obvious intereference. If i deselect the 1080p and leave it with 1080i - its spot on perfect.

However if i leave it with 1080p as being the highest output setting, and pop in COD4 which is a 1080p game (least i think it is) it plays absolutely perfect with no snow effect or intereference at all!!

The ps3 has the latest firmware update 3.XX (cant remember what it is - 3.01 perhaps?)).

2nd Issue - playback of .avi's (it wont!)

My sons 60Gb with a slightly lesser version of firmware, has always been able to play any avi ive popped onto the hdd, and gives the snapshot of the movie from the video menu.

I have copied over the exact same .avi files to the slimline, and all i get is unsupported format and it wont play them - i really dont understand this :confused:

tonight i am going to try my sons hdmi lead on my setup to see if it resolves the first issue, as for the avi playback i just dont understand why the older version plays it but the slimline wont.

Any help would be very much appreciated

update:

sorted the 2nd issue now.. for some reason it needed the folder and not just the avi file itself, now there are other files in the folder... what these actually do i dont know, and i cant remember having to have them when i copied the movies to old version of ps3 :/

not tried to solve 1st issue yet haha

go and try other HDMI lead first...

any ideas.. anyoneeeeee?

Is your son's TV 1080p? Have you tried the slimline with that?

thats one of the next steps after trying the hdmi cable he's using first... then either bring his ps3 down and try on samsung or like you say try the slimline on his...

thats a re badged 32" samsung lcd panel... which i thought was 720P only, yet when the ps3 boots he tv pops up thats its displaying 1080p :o so am not entirely sure now

I can sympathise... our Philips 32" is supposed to be 720p but plays 1080i with the Sky HD and 1080p with our PS3 slim! ...both via an Onkyo amp...

SORTED :D thank god

Popped the hdmi lead thats on sons ps3... and not a single bit of snow like intereference or anything within the XMB, as soon as i put the phillips cable i only just bought from argos... back to definate interference on all hdmi inputs .. apart from hdmi on side of lcd (not sure i get that but anyway)

So where do i stand with the phillips cable then as obviously its not doing what it should... it states its 1080P compatable yet it obviously isnt... take it back and say not fit for purpose??

trouble is i cant remember and havent got the box for the one i got for his system :o seem to remember it being cheaper too (go figure!)

I wonder if the phillips one will work ok mated up to his 32" re badged panel... hmmm might have to try and save me a trip back to city centre.

Worth a shot!

Didn't The Gadget Show do a comparison with HDMI cables back in the day and they reckoned there was little or no performance difference between the cheapy ones and the expensive ones?

well thats just a bit weird actually....

luckily the 1mtr phillips cable is near perfect for his setup (lengthwise) - i wasnt sure when i bought the first cable as to where he was going to have ps3 sat... but anyway, the phillips plugged into his re badged panel is absolutely fine.. not a single bit of intereference... how very strange!!!!

Just goes to show the not yet 'standard' of hdmi and its various supported formats/ cables/ hdtv s etc etc

Am at a loss why this has worked the way it has... anyway least a trip back to argos saved ;)

oh and ive checked the ps3 display output settings on his just now too... and sure enough its set to output 1080P and the XMB doesnt show any interference at all... well they obviously didnt test enough of them eh ;)

I think thats comparing like for like.

I believe the PS3 requires a HDMI version 1.3 lead. A lot of the cheap ones are 1.2 or less, which is ok, until you crank up to 1080p.

Maybe the lead you brought was a pre-1.3 version.

Maybe the lead you brought was a pre-1.3 version.

i could understand that if it didnt work ok on the other setup though... but it did :o

All HDMI leads are 1.3 compatible, there is no difference at all between 1.2 and 1.3 on the lead front. The only difference is the processing inside the TV or playing device. All HDMI is, is a HDCP enabled DVI connection which also carries sound. The only differences between 1.2 and 1.3 is on the audio front, 1.3 supports HD (DTS-HD for example) whereas 1.2 does not. 1.2 is perfectly caperable of carrying 1080P pictures, along with other features.

A TV does not need to be full HD to display 1080P, if the TV is not full HD and will accept the 1080P signal, then the image is downscaled to the TVs native resolution and it will display it but it wont be as clear and crisp as a full hd set.

What confuses me about my TV is that it shows a little symbol with 1080i or 1080p in it when it switches between the different inputs - does that mean its just recognising the input rather than describing what its showing?

its just informing you it has a 1080p input, what you see on the screen will be the native resolution of the TV. For an older LCD it may well be 1366x768, and an older 42" plasma will be 1024x768.

1080i - interlaced 1080p - progressive scan

I've read the differnces between the 2 but don't really know the difference. Sky broadacasts in1080i and the football picture is quality, stick a blu ray in the ps3 at 1080p (providing your tv supports it) and the picture quailty is quality. There is a difference in picture quality between the 2 but minimal (imo) i had a toshiba regza 32 inch at 1080i and upgraded to a sharp 1080p and the picture does change for the better - both tvs were set up with Digital Video Essentials dvd so picture quality was set right.

Picture quailty can change for different TV brands but unless your heavily into plasma, lcd and demand the best then either 1080i or 1080p are good - just that most men like to buy their little toys once in a while:D
