Speedo drive gear

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

I left my 2000 1.9D Felicia in with the local mechanic for a new clutch. When taking out the speedo drive to refill the gearbox with oil, he thinks he's managed to drop the plastic cog on the end of the speedo cable into the gearbox, because it wasn't on the end when the cable came out.

Assuming this to be the case, my question is does the gearbox really need to be stripped down or is the plastic cog just likely to get chewed up by the gears without damaging anything in there?

Any opinions/help much appreciated.

do a search "speedo drive", someone else asked the same question a few weeks ago.

i had same happen to mine (6 yrs ago)- i let the cogs take care off it and just drained oil and put new oil in.

the replacement part has been redesigned so it cant fall in.

Yeah, if it's the plastic bit only that dropped inside then there's nothing to worry about - the gears will take care of it! If the metal rod that runs down the middle has dropped in, then that would be dodgy, but I don't think that can happen....

From talking to the mechanic on the 'phone, it seems that it's only the plastic cog that's missing and he thinks has fallen into the gearbox. Your suggestions that it'll probably be ok are a relief. I agree with changing the gearbox oil after a short time to get rid of any bits of plastic.

Presumably there's a source for a replacement cog somewhere? Felicias are like hens' teeth in breakers yards around here and Felicia gearboxes even less common!

I'd think you'd need the entire drive - the plastic bit wouldn't come off unless it was detached from the metal bit (that drives the cable), and that is peened over to stop it coming out of the bush it runs in, I think....

just found the receipt from oct 03 when i had to get replacement part.

part no- "002409191b"

description- "mounting"

cost (back then)- £13.24 + vat.

Thanks guys, you've not only put my mind at rest about damaging the gearbox, but you've also given me some reassurance that replacement parts can be obtained and that I won't need to mortgage the house to buy it. Well done Tibsy and Djaychela!
