Octy II 170DSG versus Superb II 170 DSG

Ok, I'm toying wit h a bit of comfort, the roomsters' has and is a lot of fun. With a good remap and suspension it would be brilliant. However I'm looking at an 80 mile commute (40 each way) over mountain roads and to be honest I want to be relaxed. This is the reason I'm looking at DSG box'd cars.

Has anyone done a comparison between the Octy and Superb (new gens)?

If so what did you think?

I'm meant to be getting to a dealer soon, having moved house and the dvla refuse to acknowledge I exist it's proving troublesome to convince a dealer to give me a car for a few hours ;)

I'm looking at superb se versus maybe the vrs, might be too tempting though. I think the Octy L&K is more than a superb. I've had 2 octys in the past, hence the Superb is getting some advantage and it's flipping huge.

I have no kids, but do have a bike... swings it back to a octy estate ;)

Finally is the flappy paddle worth it? I mean really worth it or is the dsg clever enough to engine brake? Be really ready for hoofing it, that is something I need to play with I guess.

As to SE , Elegance, vRS etc, I wonder how effective the AFS ( Adaptive Front light System) really is?

Why not wait until the new Superb Estate comes along before you choose. You'd certainly get your bike in that!

How about a Superb estate?

You'd be able to fit the bike into that, and they're really good looking

Might well do, for if the superb wins then the estate is a strong contender.

I'm making an assumption that the estate and saloon/hatch superb won't be that different.

Superb Estate in my book is by far the best of the lot.

Both superbs are surely the most comfortable rides ....

Octavia scores on Pounds and MPG I guess.....

Difficult to choose, but I guess it would be the Superb Estate for me.

And one thing is for sure: It would be DEFINITELY NO Roomster.....

Mountain roads implies a fair few curves and for that the Octavia would probably be the easier car to drive.

I'd be very tempted by a superb though - acres of space

DSG engine brakes a bit better than most autos, but you still need to flip it down on steep hills and twisties.

How much are flappy paddles? If they're not too much, get them. My leon doesn't have them, sadly. It's not a difficult thing to use the tiptronic shift on the main selector, but paddles would be good.

That's the crazy thing, if you order the flappy option is's

Apparently and I and gobsmacked at this. It requires a different control unit to be installed at the factory during build.

The tiptronic flick as you say works well, so if that works what's the difference with the paddles? Some wires and a 1 or a 0? Anyway mini rant over, if I want flappy paddles I'll be ordering new as they are rare as hen's teeth in foxes poo.

Mountain roads, well it's an A road, Snake pass.

Flappy paddles are only controlled by the steering wheel control module as far as I know, however I have not (yet) retrofitted paddles for anyone myself on an Octavia. I will be doing shortly however :)

Post some details when you do.

Exactly, why should it be more complex than that... I suspect it's because no one has, no one will know. Dealers said it would cost more than the car... which I think is code for no idea, please don't ask us to try.

How much is a new steering wheel control module?

The flappy wheel is

Flappy is good mate, I like it. The controller is around £125ish, don't quote me exactly. I think it's viable for less than £500. I won't steal the member's thunder so I won't say who it is, but hopefully it will be sooner rather than later

BTW a dealer told me it wasn't possible to retrofit cruise to an Octavia Classic - I've done it to a Leon Reference (which is the same trim level, just en español) along with the trip computer and a new dashboard. I've been doing the "impossible" for years, I'm sure this one won't be a problem

My Dad has just recently bought a ex demo Superb Elegance DSG 170. Managed to find one with flappy paddle and park assist (he wanted front park sensors).

He's had the car about 3 or 4 weeks so far and been more than impressed with it, uses the paddles for overtaking and engine braking, seems to work for him.

He test drove both the 140 PD & 170 CR not so impressed with the 140.

It makes no sense to buy a L&K Octavia if you can buy a Superb Elegance for just a little more Euros compared to what you get with it.

Well equipped Octavias in general make no sense if you compare them with the Superb.

Yep, a dealer asked me about my cruise on the old Octy, that and why it would not rev past 4k or no boost :) Had the APR vallet mode on it ;)

I'm sure flappy (might as well stick with it now) will work retro and if / when it can be done, willl make buying an ex demo with 4spoke plausible, maybe even a better option.

Thanks for those comments on your dad's thoughts. Not sure about the park assist, maybe in a few years.

Have driven both........it's simple if you want comfort buy the Superb ....more toys as well
