No water temperature in my Felicia

Featured Replies

Hello

In my Felicia 1998 with 1,6 AEE engine the instrument shows no temperature when the engine is warm. I have tested according to Haynes to connect the live cable from the instrument to earth and when I turn on the ignition key it gives full reading. My questions:

What is the correct voltage between the instrument live cable and earth ( I have 5,8 Volts)

What is the resistance value in the resistor in the temperature contact sensor when the engine is cold and warm ( I have about 2,2 kohm when it is in room temperature and less than 1 kohm when I dip it down in a bucket with hot water).

I see 6.88 volts on mine, just been out to measure it.

Thanks. I have been checking a lot of answers on this topic and I now think that my thermostate has stuck and is always open. The housing and the thermostate was recently changed by the previous owner( I have just bought the car), but it might anyway have broke down. When I bought the car I had to put on a new exhaust system. When that was done I let the car idle for a long time so that the " tightening glue on the pipes" could harden. When the radiator fan started I turned off the engine and at that time the temperature instrument showed a little temperature ( halfway) but after that the needle has not moved when I drive and not when I drive around at a very low speed or even if I stand waiting for green light. I bought a new thermostate but when I inspected it ( it was made of plastic) I found that one of five or of six of the clamping arms on the thermostate were not in place so I never dared to put it in and returned it to the shop and they will get a new one in the end of this week so I will see what will happen then.

Ah, if your thermostat is stuck open, that could stop the engine getting to full operating temperature, which could kill your emissions (see other thread by this user).

Hi

I bought a new thermostat and have put it in but not tested the car yet. I took the old one which I guess have been wrong mounted so that has always stayed open which a pressuremark in the o-ring indicates. It has also been stuck open. I tested it in a cattle with boiling water and than it stuck open and there seem to be som kind of glue on the thermostate metal part and now the thermostat wont close when it is cold due to that. Maybe the one who mounted the thermostat had the same problem as I to hold it in place when I put the thermostate house into place. I had to take away the hose from the plastic thermostat house and with aid of a small screwdriver which I put through the thermostate house I could hold the thermostate in place when I put back the thermostate house in place and could tightened the screws. Maybe the glue was used to hold the thermostate in place when they mounted it previously and some stuck on the metal part of thew thermostate or maybe it was a leak in the cooling system and they have put in some " cooler repair cement" which has caused the thermostate to stuck. I do not know.

Did the "glue" look like it might have started life as a (typically) red or green paste? If so then it was a gasket compound, which, if used, should be applied in a thin continuous strip around the thermostat chamber such that it does not enter the chamber as you describe. With a typical new cardboard thermostat gasket compound isn't necessary anyway.

In the past I've made new thermostat gaskets myself using the housing as a template, and cutting the shape out of a cereal box.

Hi

In my 1.6 mpi-engine the gasket is a O-ring

Hi

Everything is working now after I also changed the sensor.
