MOT Failure......

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My Fabia vRS failed the MOT today, now the fail sheet says:

'Nearside inner front lower suspension arm rubber bush deteriorated resulting in excessive movement'.

Are they on about the console bushes? as the chap said that it looks like I need new wishbones?

I take it I don't need a new console assembly, which I presume is the aluminium part and not the wishbone, so shall I just say to him to change the bushes?

Anybody know any rough prices for the above parts (not the bushes), just the wishbones or the consoles, (has anybody ever had to change them?)

Thanks,

Ben

They will be talking about the rear front wishbone bush

  • Author

so I take it that's the console bush then? :)

Console bush is the rear wishbone bush and then you have the front wishbone bush to

yeah, just needs console bushes

  • Author

Cool, thanks people, I'll tell him to do just that then!

Ben

isnt it often less work to just change the whole wish bone rather than a bush with all the disassembly, as my local garage quoted my less change the whole thing rather than just a bush?

changing the whole track control arm wont make any odds because the rear console bush is pressed into the console as isn't part of the track control arm assembly on a fabia... however on a felicia it would indeed be easier and quicker to swap out the whole thing in one go

Hello,

If your guessing? then take it back to the testing station and get them confirm what needs replacing, then you know for sure.

Loads of info on this site to renew console or wishbone bushes, it's a DIY if your confident, but recommend to have garage check tracking afterwards.

It's deffinately the console bushes, had a look this morning and they are shot to bits, so I'll just tell them to do them. I think that's what the chap meant on the MOT fail note as the front ones don't generally fail so much.

Might get him to put in some Seat ones (does anybody know the part number quickly so I can order them?)

I presume it's cheaper for him to cut out the old bush and put a new one in than changing the whole console piece, as I wouldn't know the cost of a new Console?

It might be these:

"SEAT Cupra PD160 Console Bush (Available From SEAT Dealers) 6LL 407 183 Rubber Mounting (£7.78)"

Thanks for that, won't be doing that!

I have spoken to the chap at lunch today and he's going to change just the bushes for me, so I might get some Seat ones for the hell of it!

Thanks,

Ben

So is it worth doing the smaller bushes on the wishbone as well as the console ones? the chap said they look fine but is it just worth doing them for the hell of it as I wouldn't think it would take much extra time to fit them?

the smaller bushes rarely fail, people just change them for the powerflex ones, but i can't see the benefit myself, thats just my opinion though

OK, thanks for that, I'll leave them then, just get the Console's done.

Is it the same tools for fitting the Cupra bushes as the standard ones?

Cheers,

Ben

Hello Conshine,

I had both consoles replaced with original type bushes already fitted, with a garage.

Consoles a-little over £71.00 each side, labour £80.00 (2hours) work, tracking checked/adjusted for free.

Problem can arise with corrosion, for the long bolt, running through steel wishbone and into the alloy rear console, (corroding).

This is the main reason the garage overcame this problem (and more expensively) , by fitting new consoles.

Full instructions on this site 'HOW TO' fit these consoles, bushes etc, with brilliant photos by members.

Good luck.

i left my fronts, they are a pretty hard wearing firm bush so i wouldnt think they would need doing, mine didnt

Yeah, I put Powerflexes on mine, but when the time came to do SWMBO's, I reckoned they'd been on eight years and hadn't failed (unlike the console ones! ) so there was no reason to suspect the replacements wouldn't last as long. They don't have any voidage, which is key I think...

The standard front bushes are as hard as iron - harder than Powerflex polyurethane! You shouldn't need to replace them at anything less than 100k, unless the cars had a really tough life.

Not the original ones, they were not that hard.

Just had mine done and they lasted 90,000 miles from new but the new ones have more rubber in them. (not solid). People have had them go a lot earlier than that and don't treat them unfairly.

I'm sure these were the same bushes as the standard Fabia, which makes me wonder why they never just went for the Seat Cupra ones anyway?

Anyway, she's got new bushes and now actually feels as tight as a drum, so I'm well happy again and another years MOT....ding ding!

I'd think that Hauptmann was refering to the small front bush and not the large console bushes that you got replaced, seems that you have just had the later "four arm" bush fitted - but the solid Cupra one would have been better.

Yes, sorry Hauptmann, just re-read the whole thread!

Yea, my front ones were fine, no problem with them, I had the Console ones done.

Should have gone for the Cupra ones but these new OEM ones seem to be more beefed up in terms of rubber, still not solid, but much better.

I shouldn't have to worry now until the cars done about 170,000 miles.
