Featured Replies

Not only have I lost Google......

Press all three together and nothing :rotz:

WTF is going on ?

ah yeah, there's a simple fix for this, hold down ALT, and press F4.

Still can't get Control, Alt, Delete to do anything :rotz::confused:

It's possibly Windows having a bad time of it this session then, if problems are starting to multiply. Power switch on the front pressed in for 4 seconds is next

Then switch the router off as well. Leave both for 15 mins then switch the router back on, wait 2 mins - then boot the PC back up :)

Keyboard connection still firmly in the back of the PC I take it?

[as I said, start with the simple checks and move forward ]

I'm back - still no fecking good - still can't access Google.

If I didn't know better I'd be thinking you just suggested that to keep me off here for 15 minutes

Only joking - I'm willing to try anything at the moment :(

Can't understand why C, A, D is affected though

Oh dear!

What OS you running?

XP Home

I'm just wondering if you've not managed to click on one of the 'Accessibility features', perhaps in one of your fits of rage this evening :D

I'm sat in front of Vista at the moment, but check in Control Panel/Accessibility that stuff like Sticky Keys and the like aren't enabled. This is usually turned on by pressing down Shift continually for 8 secs or so.

I have no Sticky Keys

Try running defrag.....shut the pc down afterwards (could take a while) wait a couple of minutes and restart it.....it used to work for me on the pcs I had running XP

Virus type thing?

I've had similar symptoms before, loss of homepage and then losing control of some stuff like CTRL-ALT-DLT to shut stuff down.

I can't remember exactly what happened but there was something funny on there and had to jump through a load of hoops to get rid of it.

Try

Troubleshooting Windows XP, Tweaks and Fixes for Windows XP

Scroll down - item 51 but on the RHS. Enable Task Manager.

A reg file you download, double-click on to enter it into the registry.

Then I should reboot to make sure effect works.

If not then you may have a corrupted system file - from what I read.

The most common virus that caused Ctrl Alt Del to not work usually made XP say 'disabled by Administrator'.

If it's not just been disabled and fixed as above then as a precaution get your data off and PDQ to a read only media, such as DVD/CD.

Only windows can grab Ctrl + Alt + Del, so if it's a virus it's probably a rootkit or something in kernel space.

I've a horrible feeling you might need a power down, boot into a linux boot disk and wipe, format and reinstall if it is a rootkit, as they are hard to detect and even harder to do anything about.

A MUST for anyone with a Windows PC is a disk imaging program.

Any non-hardware problems can be overcome and a full backup restored within 20mins at the outside.

So whatever you've messed up, whatever virus has hit you - you can have a full system back up and running with all your logins, passwords, emails, desktop and other settings restored.

Basically the software takes a system snapshot and saves it to a large file. To restore your system you just point the software to the saved snapshot and your system will be restored to exactly the same as when you took the snapshot.

A free (untested by myself, but I believe it is very good) program is available from

Free Backup Software: Paragon Backup & Recovery 10 Free Edition - Overview

Approx 100MB.

Believe me once you've used this type of program you'll wonder how you ever managed without - and they are totally different and totally superior to Windows Restore function.

Virus I'd say. Hides Task manager so you cant see it easily.

Run a full online scan at Trend. That should show a root kit up.

Why you all speaky computer jargon at me ???

WTF is a root kit up when it's at home ? :o

It's a particularly stealthy bit of software that hooks into the operating system and is harder to detect and remove than other malware.

Personally, if it has a root kit (and Gadgetman is right to suggest it), then it's time to get the data off, format the disk, and start again IMO

From the symptoms described my first thought was virus. What AV software you running.

I was running the Virgin Media PC Guard, so I'll be pretty p*ssed with them if it's let something through !

If you have and use word, is that exhibiting strange behaviour as well?

For some reason this is another good tester if you have a nasty rootkit - usually what you type isnt what is on screen.

Trend Micro HouseCall - Free Online Virus and Spyware Scan - Trend Micro UK

Something appears to be stopping me running Trend HouseCall - possibly what's causing me the problem in the first place ?

Powered by Kaspersky, so should be good enough not to let stuff in unless invited.
