The best fuel?

Featured Replies

A mate of mine used to rekon that he got more mpg & better performance from petrol bought at Shell or Tesco rather than out local Total?

What do you guys think? is there better places to buy fuel?

Also Shell have released thier v-power diesel recently has anyone given it a go? there was a longer que at my local Shell for the v-power derv, maybe they giving away free Ferrari toys again?

Any thoughts?

Normal Shell diesel and a shot of Millers, Or Tesco diesel and a double shot of Millers!!

Mines isn't particularly keen on VPower diesel, The wife Suzuki goes like a bullet on VPower ULP though!

Supermarket fuel and Millers for me - but more for the additives (lacking in supermarket fuel) than any extra performance... ;)

A similar debate happened on here recently after Which? said fuel additives were pointless. Apparently, modern ECUs work to 'standardise' the engine's performance regardless of the fuel used... :ne_nau:

Mine seemed to run worse on Shell Diesel (lumpy and noisier). Tesco, Morrisons and BP all OK.

I tried the Shell V Power and it didn't make a bit of difference to mine, so I just use the normal Diesel from them.

Also, does the millers act as an injector cleaner too? only my vRS has done 91k now and I thought it might be worth a shot or two to give it a clean out? If not, will any diesel injector cleaner do as I don't want to use anything that might wreck the PD injectors?

(sorry if this seems a hijack of the OP question)

Yes, it does. The party line on additives is that they shouldn't be used on PD engines, however the one time I had an inspection service done at the stealer (had some warranty work done too...) they put in a dose of injector cleaner. Figured I had the invoice if anything ever came of it, but nothing did! :ne_nau:

It did help reduce smoking though (a result of clean injectors, presumably!) so I Redexed the car every time the oil was changed from then on. Since getting the remap, I've been dosing with Millers every time I fill up, however. Still works out cheaper that way tank-for-tank than buying 'branded' fuel, plus I get points! :D Like I say, I can't really comment on 'performance' - that's not why I use the stuff...

did this comparison before, compared all diesels. Only really stood out for me and it was total diesel excellium. This would be my recommendation, i noticed i did better mpg and engine did run smoother :).

But this is just on my experience only, others may differ.

Mine does more mpg on BP Ultimate but it only just covers cost. Millers, however, makes a big difference to standard fuel and some difference to ultimate. I now only run standard fuel with a single shot of millers.

Full results:

BP, 9192miles, 44.6693mpg, 0.0000% Saving

BP ULTIMATE, 34814miles, 46.6041mpg, 1.0429% Saving

BP ULTIMATE + Millers, 6645miles, 47.5534mpg, 3.0823% Saving

BP + Millers, 36567miles, 47.4409mpg, 6.1850% Saving

Whatever fuel is cheapest/nearest and a Double Shot of Millers :D

No, I'm not interested about the performance, just to give it a clean out as it's only ever had standard fuel in it (well a couple of tanks of v power just to try it).

Thanks for that

Ben

I filled up at Salisbury's the other day and they were being replenished by a large tanker.........with the words " shell " all over it

I tried standard shell and total diesel without additives / the total excellium diesel without additives / V-power diesel without additives.

The best (and most expensive) for my car was V-power. Better fuel economy / more responsive throttle and smoother acceleration but all all as smokey as each other.

Next for any additional boost and mainly reduction of smoke tried Wynns - no effect. Then tried Reddex - slight difference but not enough. Lastly went for Millers as it seemed to be the favourite on here. Double dosed it and............. hey presto! Huge reduction in smoking on acceleration.

Hence I now always use V-power diesel every time I fill up plus a double shot of Millers. The car has never ran so well or smoked as little. Bear in mind though that my car is quite heavily modded.

Not to hijack this thread, but ...have just read this thread, thought I'd have a look what Millers products are on offer... just wondering which product your all using as an additive to your fuel as there seems to be quite a few different products on offer

Thanks!

always use shell normal diesel occasionally put the odd vpower in when the price is right lol

In answer to your question we all use Millers Diesel Power Sport 4.

Millers Diesel Power Sport 4 has been produced to exceed the performance of the Millers Diesel Clean Plus.

It still has all the benefits of the old power plus but with the latest additives available.

When this product is added to your tank it will produce outstanding results in performance.

Millers have formulated Power Sport 4 to increase the Diesel Cetane rating by 4 numbers, which gives increased power and smoother running. Now that your engine is more responsive you will get lower exhaust emissions, improved MPG and cleaner injectors and piston crowns.

Suitable for modern Euro IV compliant vehicles with catalytic converters and diesel particulate filters. -(this is essential as VAG diesel engines are Euro 4)

500 ml bottle with ratio instructions and easy to measure bottle. Treat at double strength for an extra boost.

Don't forget to use the thanks button. :D

I saw an old 5th gear episode on 'Dave' that had a segment on different petrols. They tested ordinary unleaded, BP Ultimate and Shell Optimax (the old V-Power) with different cars on a Rolling Road. There was no difference on a small NA car, a slight difference on a Golf GTI (1.8T), and with shell on a Scoobie Impreza WRX, there was 10 or 20 BHP (5-10%) more and much more torque.

On a different note. There is now a new version of Millers DSP4, it is called Diesel Power Ecomax, there is also a Petrol additive (octane Improver).

Millers Oils - Power ECOMAX

When you take into consideration environmental factors, slight variations in quality of fuels anywhere due to storage, transport and source it will make very little discernable difference to anything. I have used fuel from all over, every "brand" every corner of the UK and I can quite honestly say makes no difference when you look at it over say 50,000 miles. Sometimes you get a bad tank, which can come from any outlet, some days you get a good one which can also come from anywhere.

Conditions on the roads such as surface, temparature, tyre pressures etc will have far greater effect on the perception of "performance" or economy in the real world, the car is designed to work within the tolerences of fuel quality and will adjust accordingly within the specified range it's meant to work.

Just stick whatever in. You wont really notice any differences other than what is a result of whats mentioned above unless your driving in lab conditions.

For the last few fills I have been running on VPD and to be honest, I can't tell a difference in performance, I'm just a bit lighter in my pocket! I normally fill with normal shell (from the same station in my town), it is only because we get more special bonus points on the loyalty card that I fill with this super stuff.

I also use the Millers DSP4 stuff to keep things clean (I'm sure shell would do it anyway) but it was mentioned in Which magazine that using these additives with normal fuel was cheaper per litre/tank full than the super fuels.

I have only ever used shell fuel since I've been driving and only use other fuel brands when my local shell is closed which is very rarely !

I ocasionally put some VPD in and it seems to run smoother but no gains in power

Don't forget to use the thanks button. :D

Bit cheeky asking for thanks since you've told him about a product that's no longer available! :P

I've been using BP ultimate since I bought over a year ago. During that time I did compare to V-Power (2 tanks to let it adjust fully) And do find my motor prefers the BP. Doesn't seem to improve power but does make the delivery a bit smoother, most noticeable in 2nd. Luckily I have a BP opposite a Shell on my way home.

I keep looking for Millers in my Local halfords but I'm starting to think they don't carry it there because they never seem to have any. I would like to give it ago.

Mine tends to be quite clean, only really smoking when totally flooring it. completely agree with Decron on the Good tank Bad tank thing though.. you do get some rubbish premium tanks and some awesome cheapo fuel tanks.. Always a disappointment when the premium stuff seems a bit lack luster.

My DERV Mondeo always ran better on BP Ultimate Diesel than any other brand. However, so far after runing a few full tanks of Unleaded through the Octy FL, I have to say Shell's V-Power(previously Optimax) has been the better performer low down in the revs. Power delivery seems smoother when crawling in traffic. May just be the engine hasn't quite loosened up yet tho.....

Mr ap0gee please see below to name a few of the many

don't forget to say thanks Mr ap0gee sir.

Seeing how Millers no longer make it, that will be end-of-line stock, deteriorating nicely on the suppliers' shelves. But if you're happy to recommend that other users buy it, that's your own lookout... ;)

Some great replies!!! thankyou :D

It seems to me that BP have turned out the best so far I will have to give them a go, perhaps with this Millers stuff, I was a bit hesitant to use any additives after reading the PD wiki but It doesn't seem to have damaged anyones cars on here! Although will it affect the warranty? how are they gonna know?

Many thanks to all :D :D :D
