How much room for negotiation on top of VAT offer?

Featured Replies

Just wanted to see what levels of discount people have managed to negotiate on a new FL Octavia VRS TSI recently, on top of the VAT deal?

And what optional extras you've had added on?

Would really be helpful to know what further, realistic % I should aim to get off as I'm planning on haggling pretty soon.

I managed to haggle a further £950 off or 5.3%

Extras ordered as per my sig

I managed to get around 3% off ontop of the VAT offer for a factory order, with a very generous fixed trade in price regardless of delivery date. Extras - metallic paint, rear parking sensors, maxidot and haggled in a full tank of fuel too. Remember the VAT offer applies to extras too.

There's certainly some room for negotiation, but the already dealer contributes towards the Skoda VAT offer (I'm sure I've read 6% mentioned).

If I rework the figures to give a more realistic trade in, more like 5% discount ontop of the VAT offer. My situation is muddied by the trade in.

I would guess looking at the DtD price would give you a good target to aim at. Apparently some dealers will match it or get pretty close so that's probably as good as you're going to get on a final price.

Managed to get my VRS TDi DSG Estate for £17893 including met paint and a spare, so reckon that's just over 4%...that was to price match one of the fleet buyers who's name now escapes me...

I mentioned the price on DtD in an earlier discussion on price with the dealer, and was told he can't see how they could sell it for that price (without somewhere along the line being connected to fleet sales/buying in bulk) and wouldn't be able to get down to that level (tbh, I'd be surprised if they did).

Which got me wondering how much margin is left in it for the dealer with this VAT offer at the mo.

For about the same price on DtD, I'd also get Xenons which would be nice

I ordered a VRS 2.0TSI DSG estate. I then added Metallic paint, heated leather seats,MFSW with bluetooth, rear parking sensors, privacy glass, silver roof rails, auto lights. My local dealer quoted £20,340 (This was after skoda price increase of £500).

I got a quote from DtD which was £19,087.

Following advice from this forum I ordered from Rainsworth Skoda in Mansfield who matched DtD's quote. There was also a dealer near the M25, Marlborough Skoda who also matched DtD's quote. As I live in Leeds I chose the nearer one and having been to the showroom I'm satisfied with my choice.

So in essence i saved a further £ 1,240. on top of Skodas 15% offer. I have no trade in though.

Percentage wise I don't know what it is as Skoda's 15% offer (Not VAT free as some believe) does not apply to the delivery charges and is applicable to the RRP before VAT is added.

SlimAdy,

Just been reading your other threads relating to diesel or petrol. I do virtually the same driving as you and in same conditions.

I currently drive an 07 Audi A4 Avant 2.0l TDI S Line. In 2 and half years I've done 25,000 miles mostly in stop start traffic.

Firstly I've never had any problems with it driving in those conditions and secondly the fuel consumption and VED is brilliant. Hence my initial thought was to go for the VRS diesel.

Having said that I've just ordered a VRS Petrol based on motoring press reports about how good the engine suits that car and other advice relating to costs of fuel and mileage.

Like you I look at a car for its appeal, looks, practicality and the heart plays a big part in it, often in the face of other compelling factors. This time having picked a Skoda over a replacement Audi my head has had some involvement in the choice. The wife was adamant that we have another Audi until she drove the FL VRS.

To get into a similar specced Audi would have cost me another £8, 000. I don't feel like I'm losing out on anything. Look at the cost saving you get on the FL VRS at the moment and it's a no brainer for the likes of us. You can get the thick end of 20% saving with Skodas offer and you also save another 1K over the cost of the diesel. The extra cost of fuel and VED is more than offset by the savings all round.

Take the plunge:thumbup:

@pg220 Couldn't agree more - for just over 3K more than my current Ibiza FR TDi cost, the FL Octavia vRS is superb VFM at the mo and I know I'd kick myself if I let the offers pass. Going in on Saturday to see what I can get the price down to (hence this question, I want to go fully prepped). Undecided on colour though atm - difficult to decide!

@everyone else, thanks for the info so far, keep your comments coming - giving me a really good idea of the average deal to be had!

What part of the country are you in?

I got £3,500 off list price on mine as I used the scappage scheme. I didn't try to haggle anything further off as I was very happy with this price. Upon checking the DtD price for the same car, it was around £2,900 off list. Excluding the £1,000 the Government have contributed to my deal, there is £400 difference between the deal I got and the DtD price so there must be some room there for the dealer (assuming the DtD price is rock bottom). I guess it depends how much you want to squeeze and how much you value dealing face to face with your local dealer.

I've ordered a estate vrs tdi dag with mdi, silver roof rails, mfsw, front and rear parking sensors, Bluetooth, black leather, met paint, maxidot I think that's it? I'm paying £16505 but that's tax free military sales so I doubt nobody will offer near this but they are still making money through me and the company I ordered through!

Heated seats and auto lights and rain sensors too

More stuff

I asked the same question about a month ago.

The having the DtD price handy will help you negotiate. The bad news is that all VRs prices have gone up by £455 since I ordered (according to the new brochure).

What I ordered:-

VRs CR Hatch Manual

Anthracite Grey Metallic

Heated Seats

Leather

Xenon's

Auto Dim Mirror (inc. rain sensor & light assist.)

Maxi Dot

Spare Wheel

DtD price was £18150, I got mine from Progress Skoda (Letchworth) (who impressed me so much I've just had some work done on the Golf with them) for £18600

They also give 10% off servicing & also offered discounted servicing on the Golf (which was bound to be less & of higher quality than that offered by our local VW d(st)ealer)

Then you just have to wait...& wait...:orb_froze

well not forgetting the 0% finance i got maxidot, tank of fuel, the £400 worth of paint, full size wheel and managed to haggle up a bit on the price they gave on my trade in increased it by £500 and to be fair i didnt think it was a bad offer in the first place. at the end of the day you have to walk away feeling YOU are happy with the deal i am more than happy with mine..... well will be when the car turns up as have to wait til jan now

What part of the country are you in?

Hampshire

Ordered my VRS FL TDI Estate in early October (a few days after the price increase!!:(), added metallic paint, silver roof bars and sunset glass and secured the deal for £17236. This was the price I was quoted by Dtd and I spent about an hour on the phone ringing around all the dealers in the North West until I could find one that matched it...I must say that this was quite an eye openner as some of the larger dealers who you might expect to secure a healthy discount from didn't want to know, some sarcastically laughed and some said they'd ring me back and didn't...All in all I must say I was quite disappointed with the level of enthusiasm from almost all of the dealers for a customer looking for a cash sale and prepared to pay a deposit there and then....My last call was to probarbly the smallest dealer in the country (don't want to reveal who, as i'm sure they could not handle an influx of enquiries!!), and within 20mins I had paid the £1000 deposit over the phone.

On a seperate note I must agree with the previous poster with regards to the quality and VFM of the new Ovtavia...One of the many hats I wear is that of a 'vehicle assessor' for the organisation I work for. As such I am fortunate to drive many 'Premium marque' cars and I can honestly say that none fair any better than the Octy. To me it was a no brainer, I consider myself to be a person with more "sense than money" and thankfully not the other way round!!. Despite the 'kudos' of the Audi or BMW badge I could not justify paying an extra 8-10k for the privilege.

My build date is week 49 so I don't expect to see the car till the new year...Still, some things are worth waiting for!!!

Yep, got it and replied...cheers

None of the dealers in surrey would budge from list let alone DtD, so I used the DtD quote. I was a cash buyer and no trade in.

I ordered on 6 October (ie post price increase) an Elegance Estate 1.8TSI DSG with a few extras (Columbus, Anthracite Grey, rear parking sensors and wood trim(!)). After initial lengthy negotiations - on a like for like basis - I was given a price which was about £900 above the DtD equivalent price (for the same spec). The £900 was about £300 less than the "VAT free" discount price - ie the original gap was about £1200. The £900 gap was bridged with an extra £200 on p/x (the original trade in was a fair price) and free servicing for 3 years - which I assumed was worth about £600. I thought this was fair and agreed immediately (I had been in the process of walking out and was called back with the revised deal). I also took the 50% 0% interest deal too.

You all hangon until January and you'll see the return of the 15-25% slashing going on, the economy isn't recovering despite what they tell you and all those ppl who spent out on the "scrap scheme" are now running out, not that it ever existed anyway because all the firms raised the list on everything at the same time to effect the add some on to knock some off thing, if this is anything to go by back in 2005 a friend bought a brand new Superb 1.9 TDi auto Elegance with solar roof for 18k, iirc the car listed at 23k back then, and for the guy in Hampshire, don't waste time at Sparshatts they plain don't deal, look in the partners/members section for Allams Skoda and ask James if he can offer you a good price.

Agreed it might be worth waiting until end of scrappage, dealers did'nt appear to want my business back in the summer. Once the scrappage runs out and other offers then things might be eaiser.

I disagree about Sparshatts. You can get a deal with them. I did, and had a really positive experience dealing with them so I personally recommend them (Sparshatts @ Botley). I'm not saying you will get a DtD matched price. Like anywhere, if you're prepared to haggle hard, you can get a deal.

I dunno about Botley, my experience is at Fareham, the sales and reception staff are quite pleasent and helpful, but you get the feeling they are under orders to only do what they have to, I had dreadfull backup service from them, and I'm still awaiting a call to tell me a small part I ordered has arrived, I only paid for it 15 mths ago, I just can't be bothered to drive over there to pick it up if it's even still there, and as it's a crucial service item which I had no trouble getting from Peter Cooper VW at all I find that pretty useless as well, and while I was looking for my car the salesman I was dealing with at the time rang me about a week after I'd bought a car to say they had a bloke wanting to PX one, but the valuer guy bid him something like 8k on a 2yr old 23k car against another 23k car and he walked, isn't Botley a S/H site?

  • Author

Nope, Botley isn't a S/H site.

It's the new Skoda dealership for Southampton, taking over from Freeborn now I believe.

I've been very impressed with the service and friendliness at Botley. Far better than a few others I've been in.
