Dodgy glass marks?

Featured Replies

I seem to have some weird streak marks all over the glass on my car. Problem i'm having is on cold mornings, I get bad condensation on the outside glass. One of the first corners I take leads me onto a main road with the sun blasting on the passenger window, makes visibility about 0% lol I clean it off, comes back within about 10 seconds

I cleaned them all using normal car shampoo & auto glym glass polish but it still seems to make these marks just by rubbing a damp cloth over or rubbing your hand over the glass. I was going to try some rain x or something, but is this some kind of residue? Not had this issue with other cars.

The marks are always in exactly the same places which makes me think it needs something to give it a good clean. Any suggestions?

Some window cutting compound perhaps. PM Baker21, the resident expert.

If that's definately on the outside & you've tried AG Glass Polish which obviously hasn't worked I'd suggest claying the windows as the next step.

As for treatments, I've not used Rain-X but I do use Clear-vue as a post-clean and I've never had any residue issues.

Thanks for the replies guys, if anyone has any more tips then let me know!

I've ordered some Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol to split with water to try clean then up nice, then I may try rain x or halfords own (seems to get good reviews!) but will try by just cleaning first inside and out.

The halfords intensive glass cleaner seemed to do the trick on another car that suffered from this issue. More cut than the AG stuff, but not something I'd use regularly due to that.

I had probs with mine for weeks, from new..tried all sorts, including the likes of windowlene and ag glass polish..finally sorted (thanks to these forums) by using clay..worked wonders

Meguiars Quik Clay

I'd expect AG Glass Polish to sort it really, but yeah - if not, next step clay

I have to be honest and say if you don't have clay already, don't go spending £20+ when a £4 bottle of the halfords own cleaner will sort it.

Just MHO of course.

Try a metal polish like Megs NXT or Blackfire Wet Diamond, slightly more agressive than polish but still window safe and leaves a good streak free finish.

Actually there is something else that is worth trying.

Odd as it sounds, a basic tooth paste, give it a rub around on a damp window and watch the muck come off. It's a mild abrasive and I'd think most people have some they can try.

Yep, definitely good tips if you've not got clay already

I've seen the toothpaste trick work before :)

Scenario - Last day of Italian holiday and just noticed that someone has marked the door on the brand new Scenic hire car with a scuff mark. Wishing I had taken up the extortionate offer of the insurance top up before remembering that toothpaste could be used to sort it out.

Result = happy blemish free Scenic and quids in pocket john999boy

Thanks for the tips guys.

Have used toothpaste on a few things before, excellent at removing permanent marker! I remember using it on some plastic once, scratched it to buggery! So little apprehensive about using it on glass, sure it'll be okay though with a decent polish :)

Will try the alcohol first, as I needed it to clean some other things anyway. Clay doesn't seem too pricey, so that may be next in line if it doesn't help! Or some toothpaste in one of the corners (i'm a wuss)

A little late in the day as I have been away from the WWW this weekend but claying gets my vote........
