The infamous clonk

Featured Replies

Had the camera in the car so thought why not give it a try:

Definitely comes from either front corner, only when cold mainly over speed bumps or cornering :(

That sound familiar to anyone? As I say its kinda like someone pinging a dent out a can, but sometimes a bit more metallic soundin

Sounds very much like a sticking damper piston, or damper rod in the seal. Try spraying a little cone boot oil onto the damper rods.

the normal suspect is the anti-roll bar drop links

If you're right, I'll love you forever! Will try and find some cone boot oil, no idea what that is lol

Had new arb bushes fitted which made no difference so I don't think its that :)

Cone boot spray is a lube used to fit CV joint gators. Most good motor factors will stock it. Failing that, some white PTFE spray grease will do the job as well. You should drive my Moggy for a week, when it stops rattling it usually means something has fallen off :o)

I have lots of dash rattles lol drivers door, glove box, random bit of trim on drivers side rear...

just fixed the bonnet creaking against the rubber boots on the chassis with some silicone grease, that stuffs amazing

could be a damper, did you replace the top mounts in the end?

Nah, combination of lack of funds and all 3 places I asked for a quote never got back to me in the end lol it a nasty job or something? :D

Going to spray them with some spare PTFE spray I have as suggested then go from there.

No not nasty at all, i ve got 2 in stock somewhere i think, i ll have a look over the weekend

I have some std Fabia suspension here too, so if you need a cheap damper it could be something worth investigating :)

Cheers Ally/Wardy :) Will check it out over the weekend as trying to fumble after work in the dark is a pain! Will post back when I've given Moggys suggestion a try

During (don't laugh) dry weather my suspension lets out a clonk, when turning or going over a bump, assume suspension coil found a real dry spot. Wet weather suspension soundless.

Mine seems to be the other way around, the colder and wetter the worse it is

Jacked up and sprayed the dampers with ptfe spray this morning, then took it over some nearby speed bumps. no clonks yet, but heard some of the other occasional squelchy like noises that often accompany it.

Will report back during the week, see if it still does it. Can't be anything too major surely, its been doing it for 12 months now!

Just had to pop out to the tip... 20 MPH down a straight, flat road CLONK randomly

Do'h :(

Strange as it may seem, a damper that is not leaking is often noisy, as the piston ram runs dry in the top seal. Most dampers are designed to allow a tiny amount of oil to leak past the seal.

I gave them a good poking around, didn't see any signs of anything leaking. They definitely seem to be working okay. Springs nicely seated too, although could it be slight movement causing it?

Strange how sometimes it happens when going down seemingly flat straight roads :( Don't think i'll ever find the cause, unless I change frickin everything

erm anti-roll bar drop links anyone? must be an echo in here

drop links done

replaced arb with new en, now got powerflex bushes too

front and rear wishbone bushes done

engine mounts

All replaced by people that know what they were doing, but yet it still clonks like a mofo

  • 8 months later...

I have finally fixed the clonk/clunk/bonk sound that has plagued my low mileage 07 vRS for many, many months.

Some history, the Stealer's service department greased the nearside gearbox/engine top mount a couple of times as per the TBS and yes the sound disappeared for a a few weeks but then gradually returned. That was all they could offer whilst the car was under warranty - SHAME ON THEM!

After wrapping a towel around my head and meditating on the matter and also reading about so many others seemingly being unable to find a solution to this not uncommon problem, I bit the bullet and had the mount changed (revised part number 6Q0199555BA for the BLT engine) at an all in cost of £130 fitted and finally I have tranquillity. So there is ho need to spend fortunes changing consol bushes, dog bones, strut mount, ARB bushes, drop links etc. just try renewing that humble engine mount.

I hope this helps others who are plagued by this design fault - really Skoda you should know how to build an engine mount by now.
