Timing belt? Camshaft belt? Alternator Belt?

Featured Replies

Hi all i drive an Skoda Octavia 1.6 (55kw/75hp) car and with 103,000 km and i was wondering if it was time to change any of the belts. i think the last time i went for sevicing the mechanics told me that one of the belts had been changed however i am not too sure which belt it was? do i have to change it?What is the difference between the different belts?

Timing / camshaft belt are the same. Alternator / aircon belt may also be the same - not sure about the 1.6. On the 1.8T the alternator and aircon share a separate multi-V belt.

Replacement schedule for the timing belt is 80000 miles or I guess 120000 km. The other should be changed when it shows signs of perishing or wear or starts slipping.

Loss of the cam belt will cause engine failure. Again I'm not certain about the 1.6 but on the 1.8T the pistons will hit the valves if the timing belt breaks. The other is non-critical.
