Problem with soilid flywheel conversion and clutch on vrs

Featured Replies

Back on 20/8/08 (70078 miles) my original clutch failed. My local garage carried out a solid flywheel conversion and new clutch with genuine parts costing £511.13. The clutch always felt ok but when pulling away up hill quickly it would never bite straight away. Now just over 12 months later (and a remap to 220bhp) my clutch is beginning to slip when at maximum power. Not very good bearing in mind the car is now at 78000. I don’t drive the car hard and I don’t spin the wheels or ride the clutch. Because the work is over 12months old it is no longer guaranteed. So I will have to pay up for a new one to be put in. Any other ideas on what else it might be? Is it known for the vrs to suffer cylinder failure? As usual any help would be gratefully received as it might save me lots of money.CheersDave

You may need an uprated clutch to handle 220BHP

I'd start by having the clutch system checked because a worn slave can cause slipping or unwanted engagement. Also, it's way cheaper than changing the clutch, but I'd go for an uprated one if I was changing the clutch.

I thought a standard vRS clutch was good to 250bhp, on a petrol anyway? Diesels are different because of all the torque

A stock vRS clutch has a DMF; this has already been converted to a conventional single mass flywheel.

found out what the problem was. the diff seals had gone and contaminated the first clutch as used on the single mass flywheel. New clutch ordered and new diff seals fitted. Problem sorted!

Guys look out for this in the future.

Are you talking about the differential output seals, behind the output flanges?

How the hell does gearbox fluid get from there to the clutch?! Or am I missing something?

Guess you may aswell change the gearbox fluid too, since you'll have lost a load.

What single mass conversion kit did they fit in the first place then? You say it was genuine, so I'm guessing it was a G60 flywheel and VR6 clutch kit.

Glad you're sorted

A friend who runs a local VAG (and peugeot) specailist sorted it.

The clutch kit came from TPS.

I did not see the box so not sure what seals were replaced as he did it when i was at work.

All i know is it cost me alot of money and because there was a problem with the correct bits i was without the car for 3 weeks.

But its all good now.

It was probably the input seal on the gear shaft(the one the release bearing goes onto) which had failed, this is inside the bell housing & if it leaks oil it goes al over clutch. I cant see how driveshaft seals leaking oil can get onto the clutch.

im guna sound stupid now but will this kit convert the fabia vrs or is it just compatible with the octavia vrs thanks for any info

Indeed and that's so common for killing a clutch that most places recommend changing the seal while the box is out anyway to save the cost of killing the new clutch with oil.

www.awesomegti.com do a good singlemass fly wheel kit for £380.00, the kit includes the flywheel, new LUK clutch plate and pressure release plate, had mine in for 15,000 miles now and still perfect, even handles the 245bhp my car puts out and peak performance, brilliant peice of kit,

I have a 05 fabia vrs which have recently applied a pd170 hybrid turbo including a airtrch front mount, straight threw pipe and an egr delete. I am wanting a stage 2 map suitable for the turbo however i have recently herd the clutch slipping slightly in mostly 3rd and 4th gear. I have been lookin for a new 1 but am abit unsure what i will need for this sort of power touching 250bhp. Could anybody advice me of a half decent clutch that if possible will not tap like most iv herd.

Thanks
