DSG or Manual CR vRS?

Hi all,

I'm on the brink of chopping my 54 fabia vRS in for a new CR Octavia vRS estate which I'll probably keep this for about the same amount of time (about 5 years). The gadget and technology lover in me says get a DSG. But then I keep thinking that I like driving a manual so why bother with the extra expense (and more so if it goes wrong). Any other reasons for / against?

Take a test drive in a DSG with flappy paddles. You get the best of both worlds with DSG and as for it going wrong, I have 280,000kms on my remapped PD140 and its still going strong.

I should add that I will likely remap as well - just a generic stage 1 though.

From what I can gather, the DSG box itself has no problem with the extra torque, its the DMF that is the weak link but this would be the case with a manual also. I think the DMF's where revised around 2008 and are a little bit more reliable now. According to my tuner, my Octy has approx. 400nm and has had for the last 280,000kms and I've only had to replace one DMF, which I think is reasonable given the mileage.

If you like driving a manual you will miss the left leg pump and left arm stir, but if you want a better and more relaxing drive the DSG has to win, especially with padles

That's no bad thing - you might be taken with the diesel once you've driven it :thumbup:

From the post title it sounded as if you were actually looking for a diesel, as CR is only on diesel engines.

I went for DSG and have been driving a DSG touran for the last month and would not want to go back to manual for day to day driving.

The DSG is fantastic. There's almost the control of a manual, and heavy traffic is nowhere near as tiresome. It's fun enough in the twisties too.

Make sure you do some manoeuvring with it: some people say a DSG is jerky, some say it's fine. You may also find that the combination of 4 cyulinders + diesel + automatic makes for a droning noise. It was intolerable with a Mercedes B200 CDI that I once had, but a Skoda CR diesel will probably be quiet enough for this not to be an issue.

Let us know how you get on. There's another thread above about diesel v. petrol - the main criteria are (a) your annual mileage, and (B) the extra torque you get with a diesel (although the vRS petrol engine is torquier than many).

If you use the DSG to it's full potential..ie all 3 modes, I assure you that you won't regret it..fabulous fun :-)))))))))))))))

Yes I got my models muddled up. I probably will go for a petrol. Obviously CR is a diesel technology!
