i am thinking of getting a new octavia vrs and have a few questions hope some of the skoda vrs drivers will help.

1,should i get a petrol or diesel vrs what are the pros and cons for both?

I'm hopefully taking delivery of a diesel vRS in a couple of weeks. Having driven a diesel Golf GTI for 7 years, I'm converted to getting 50mpg and although the initial outlay was a bit more I'm quids in now. And the CR engine will be better than the older TDi I had.

I used DriveTheDeal.com to broker a good buy and essentially got about 18% off the list price though at the moment the VAT free deal will automatically get you about 13 / 14 % off. Didn't really consider getting a used 59 reg though they may be hard to find given recent delivery times (see another thread about all this).

As for options; I set a budget and tried to stick within it. So I went for Xenons, light assist package, Bluetooth (which gives you Maxidot, itself essential) heated seats and rear sensors. I was tempted by the leather seats but that would have meant dropping the Xenons to fit the budget and since the standard seats on vRS are part leather, I gave the full leather a miss.

I've done 10,000 miles in a vRS diesel estate, new in April this year. I do about 18,000 miles a year, and for anything above about 15k a year diesel is the best bet. Mine has the CR engine and it has vigorous performance and lots of torque. That said, the petrol engine in the vRS is a good torquey unit too, unlike some high-performance petrol engine which give of their best only above 4,000 rpm.

Mine's a manual: you have to decide whether you want DSG. If you go for a test drive, check how the DSG operates in manoeuvring.

They come pretty well equipped: mine was already built and in the UK so hasn't got the maxidot trip computer and the variable boot floor, both of which I'd have had if it had been a factory order. It does have rear parking sensors, which are a fairly cheap extra and can be put on by the dealer.

For some reason known only to Skoda, if you want a multi-function steering wheel you have to have DSG.

I'm del;ighted with mine. It followed a VW Golf estate TDI 140 bhp: I wanted a CR 170 which VW do'nt do as an estate. Audi do with the A4 but it's £6,000 more (list price) and simply isn't worth it.

I'd say Petrol vs Diesel depends on milage still, the Diesel costs more and where I am I would pay about 2-3p more per litre for Diesel.

I do approx 7-8k miles per year and do a fair bit of town driving getting to work and back, the DPF on the Diesel ruled it out for me due to the short runs.

So far I've done 600 miles and averaged about 31mpg overall and get about 250 miles to a tank, mines is the 2.0TSI

I've got the 1,8 TSi Elegance Hatch & I'm very happy with it too.

The reasons I chose that are:

1: The guys here recommended that I went for a petrol model due to the low mileage that I do each year, which is about 6-7k.

2: The insurance on a vRS is quite steep for me.

3: I don't need to have something with 200bhp!

4: I don't want to stick out like a sore thumb to both Plod, thieves & vandals.

5: I did choose the DSG gearbox (I've got a 7 speed 'box) and I'm quite glad I did, it makes driving a breeze! (That's coming from someone who's never really driven a Semi-Auto & was scared about driving it!)

6: I'm getting reasonable fuel economy out of it, I compared the vRS against the 1,8 and I tend to think that the vRS drinks it especially in DSG guise.

7: I couldn't get a CR diesel engine in the Elegance trim. :thumbdown:

What you need to ask yourself is:

Do I need 200bhp?

What's it going to cost to insure it?

What's it going to cost to fuel it?

What options/toys do I want on it & are they available?

I have just ordered and had some similar dilemma's. The biggest one for me was not 'Petrol or Diesel' (as I only do approx 10k per year so the petrol makes more sense for me), but 'Hatch or Estate'. I couldn't decide for myself so I left it to fate and tossed a coin.

I'm not sure going for a 59 plate makes sense unless you can't wait for a car. Facelift models don't seem much cheaper than new.

Apparently, Maxidot is a must have as well as a spare wheel. I have gone for auto dimming mirror with light assist, rear sunblind and F&R parking sensors. Couldn't justify the Xenons or leather even though they were within my budget.

ouch! only 250 to the tank????? must be the short runs i guess? im getting 325-380 from a tank with a mix of roads

250 miles to a tank?? Or is that a typo? That works out to be ~ 20mpg

1. That's the classic Diesel v Petrol debate! I'm in the same boat as nokiauk - the style of driving I do, 8K a year, a lot of short stop-start during the week, ruled the diesel out for me. If it hadn't have been for the DPF, I would have gone with the diesel. Having said that, I loved the petrol when I test drove it, so looking forward to making the switch back from my current diesel.

2. IMHO, if you want something that new, buy new. The deals at the moment are just too good at the moment not to.

3. All of them! I've ordered leather vRS seats, Maxi-dot, metallic paint and the spare wheel. Leather interior because it looks great, and easier to keep clean. Maxi-dot because it seems like one of the must-haves for the price. Metallic paint (Race Blue) because....I like the colour :) Spare wheel because it's peanuts. I would also have liked Xenons, but had to prioritise. For me, it was all about the haggling - from my original quote, I managed to haggle the price down enough to mean I effectively got the leather interior for free.

Just a quick note on the insurance, it does pay to play around with the options. Am currently with Admiral whilst awaiting my vRS, and looked at their Multi-quote thingy online. It was £70 cheaper to add my wife on her provisional license than not at all, also £50 cheaper to say it was on the street overnight than in the garage!!!?
