Fabia vRS Funny noise

Featured Replies

Noticed yesterday properly that my vRS is making a funny noise which seems to get louder the faster I go but has nothing to do with engine speed. To test this I took it out of gear at 50 and it still makes the noise.

My dad thinks it's the exhaust blowing somewhere but if it makes the noise out of gear while moving how can it be? The only thing that's changed on the car is that I've put 312mm brakes on (I think the noise was there before this) and the undertray isn't on. I know many run without it because theyve lowered and haven't heared this complaint before., which makes me think it's not this.

I'm washing the car today so I'll hose down underneath the car just in case it's something loose making the noise. But at the moment I have no idea what this noise could be and I'm worried it could be something serious.

Thanks in advance

Martyn

Look carefully at the tyres.

Also, you say you've fitted 312s. Have you replaced plain rotors with grooved and/or cross-drilled or dotted ones?

I checked my tyres. No bulges or tears and pressures are spot on. My 312's came off an Audi TT and came with new original disks and pads. Brakes are working fine. I also had my rear disks and pads changed at the same time. I checked to see if they are sticking and they are not.

Could be a wheel bearing. Check if it gets louder when you turn the steering / go round a corner.

That was my 1st thought but the noise is the same on straights and on corners doesn't seem to get louder for the moment.

I've only seen this once before, but check the tyres for signs of a wear bar that's nearer the surface than the others on that tyre.

Tyre wear on each tyre is even and no wear indicators are sticking out. Given the car a good wash and sprayed underneath, took it for a spin and it's still doing it which I wasn't surprised about. Gonna have someone take a look at it. If one side has gone is it worth doing both for completeness? How much is a wheel bearing for a vRS?

Typical and it's just passed an MOT too.

Check wheel nuts are tight, CV joint boots for splits, wheel bearings, exhaust heat shields (they can drone) exhaust hangers, check rear brakes and make sure the handbrake levers are free and not binding. Exhaust heatshield at the rear can lose it's fixings, so check those.
