After some clutch slip in higher gears I had mine swapped for an uprated one from Jabbasport.

An item noted on the invoice from the garage was a noisy gearbox. Its a rattle when the clutch pedal is released but it goes away when the cluch pedal is pushed in. Its also quite loud. If I accelerate hard in say 2nd or 3rd and then release the box there is a loud roar, almost a scream from the box.

OK I thought, its an SMF and thats going to vibrate more and if there is wear in the box its going to be worse, and the garage suggested it could just be gearbox wear. Anyway I lived with it and saved up for a box rebuild. Its been done (twice now) and the noise is still there. The original box needed doing anyway as it would stick in 1st sometimes and wouldn't get 4th from 5th so I'm not too unhappy with the gearbox people.

The gearbox people (a specialist seperate from the original garage) want to put in a third completely new one (rather than rebuilding mine again) to see if that fixes it. They also didn't spot anything untoward in the clutch when the box was removed but I don't know if they removed whatever they would need to remove to look at it in detail.

EDIT : You may realise I have no idea what is in the clutch or how it works... B)

I'm beginning to suspect the clutch kit. The garage have contacted Jabba who have said something about 12 month warranty (we are a month over that now since the original swap but the noise was noted on the original dated invoice so not sure if that counts) and they have said there are no problems with the kit but mentioned something about it being modified.

Any ideas ?

Do I have a duff clutch kit ?

Sounds like input shaft bearings are shot. Everything inside the gearbox stops rotating with the clutch down, when the car is standing still. It's a constant mesh box, except for reverse, which uses a sliding idler gear. It's usually a tough box, but the bearings do sometimes fail. I've found with all cars, that fitting a replacement box is always better than having the box rebuilt. Unfortunately it's an expensive way of doing things. £1600 in this case.

Depends why they were rebuilding the box in the first place. For example, if you were repairing a worn syncro ring, and the bearings were ok, they would not be done to keep costs down.

Sometimes the input shaft bearings get wrecked due to vibration on the first motion shaft. An out of balance clutch/flywheel, or worn/missing spigot bearing in the tail of the crankshaft. A diesel box takes a fair old hammering due to torque spikes. One of the reasons most manufacturers fitted dual mass flywheels.
