Mechanics: put me off!

Featured Replies

From the last resort - me picking up a high mileage 1.4MPI Fabia and attempting to convert it to a 1.9 TDI! Come on, tell me how hard this is gonna be! I know it'll need the entire loom from my shell, but what else could I be overlooking converting a 1.4MPI to a diesel. I'll need the fuel tank, fuel pump, engine/box..., instrument cluster which I have too. Do 1.4 MPIs have weaker driveshafts as well?

Any musings on this? If I can find the highest mileage 1.4MPI cheap, I'd be very tempted as I can replace the OEM suspension as well if worn...

Is this really a good way to use my engine, or probably best kept as spares for my current car, with it being same engine code, the lot. ;):D

You building this to sell on or as a trackday car?

'Tis easier to go the other way, IIRC

Nope - just a way of trying to make a little bit of money as an engine rusting away doing nothing is totally pointless...

I think you're right Jon - a mate converted a P100 from diesel to 2.0 petrol, and was easy and is reliable too. Still fancy a winter challenge though, if only to make use of all the bits I have lying around going to waste. :(

Jason, I don't want to put you off even more, but I have difficulty in seeing how you could make this a profitable venture. I can't say for myself or from experience 'cos I don't have any, but by the time you've done the engine / wiring transplant and any other things, you'd have to sell it at a relatively decent price to make anything. Anyone coming along would probably be put off in spending x amount for a car which has had major surgery. If you want it as a project car for fun track days, then fair enough, but to sell on.....

Good luck. I'll shut up now :o

Diesel go kart?

Sell the engine. You're wasting your time converting. The paperwork and hassle trying to sell the thing will be dreadful, you'll lose piles of cash.

Get a mk1 Golf of some description and drop the PD motor in that. Far more fun to be had with the finished product...

Don't try to convert, it's harder than it used to be in the old days of nice simple cars!

Easier to buy an old Golf TD as the nice man said....

Be lucky either way!

Ask yourself this , would you buy a car that had had a complete rebuild by a couple of lads working in their back yard?

The resale value would be complete pants.

Either find a suitable TDI with a dead engine , or just stick the bits on Ebay at a 99p start and get rid of them for good

Jason ,I find it very difficult to believe that somebody out there isn't looking for a 1.9TDI engine ..........

Well - the way its going, with the amount of money the engine is worth to me as spares I may just try and clean the engine/box up a bit, spray it with some anti corrosion gunk, and wrap it up nicely and store it somewhere. ;) With it being the same code as my engine, its worth a lot as spares (to me anyway) I can also keep the whole loom as spares too.

Well, anyway, there's gonna be one final day of removing stuff off the shell then its going to be ceremoniously driven over with a 30 ton swingshovel - I'll take pictures. ;)

Knowing you as I do;

make sure you drive over the right Fabia! :D

How about a twin engine Fabia?

How about a no engined "Flintstone edition" Fabia. Just cut holes in the floorpan and away you go :D

Or in Jasons case cut holes in the roof :D
