Electrical gremlins

Featured Replies

Hi:

Question about my wife’s 2001 Fabia 1.4 Elegance.

This car has been plagued by numerous electrical gremlins over the years, but yesterday took the biscuit. Unless I had seen it for myself I would have suspected that the wife had too much mulled wine over Christmas.

Whilst out (she was driving) she tried to open the electric window on her side using the block of switches in the drivers door. Instead it opened the passenger window – and the passenger switch opened the drivers window! We stopped and both tried this several times and the same thing happened every time. The rear electric windows worked as normal. All the windows opened positively and without hesitation.

Today I went out to investigate further. And the window switches all worked as normal!

The problem (whatever it was) appears to have gone away.

Whilst I’m not too fussed over this (as things seem back to normal) but I can scarcely credit that such a fault could occur.

Has this happened to anybody else and/or any suggestions as to the possible cause?

Mine does it too when it's wet - really annoying when you try and drop the passenger window to see where your going and yours opens, soaking you.

Anyway, try either holding the window switches in the up position, with the window at the top until you hear a click from each of the window motors, which resets them. Or disconnecting the battery for a few minutes, which resets everything on the car.

That might clear it if it does it again, but I think it's something to do with water, and my central locking goes mad in the rain too.

Joe.

this is certainly not an uncommon fault, plenty of threads about it in the past

Common quirk, happens on VAG cars as well.

Mine does it, somebody said its something to do with the convenience system needing a software update

Thanks for the all the replies.

Good to know that I'm not dreaming this !!!

Mine was so bad the convenience unit needed to be replaced, even the wing mirrors were going funny and the central locking was completerly dead. Once new unit was installed all is working fine again

The central locking recently went mad on my '03 Octavia TDI. It kept locking and unlocking and trapping me and son inside. I disconnected the battery for 20 mins, reconnected and things are back to normal (for now)
