In answer to your statement…………yes you are!

Although I can see your point (hence my Sedici as a second car emoticon-0101-sadsmile.gif )

Same here, and it's snowing with a vengeance AGAIN

Maybe just invest in some good tyres for this weather?

For info, no snow down in the westcountry. Glad about that as it looks like it's going to be a DRY cold snap this weekend which means no ice.

no snow in the capital of manchester!

No snow in Norfolk either since last week - very annoying as I already have a Octy 4x4 :'(

would be the sensible option, thing is the 1er is not really roomy enough for all the guff I carry about in the boot. Not really due for a change but if this weather continues I may just bite the bullet. :S

no snow here either, we had about half an inch 2 weeks ago, and that was it

slider,

I agree with one of the posts above, in the short term, put four winter tyres on it in the first instance. This will make a huge difference and allow you to drive around and be much safer. It will also take out any of urgency of replacing your present car with the first thing that comes along.

Their is nothing wrong with an "Octy 4x4", very good cars but you need to be sure that is the sort of car your looking for. I see that your a BMW fan, well you could also look at something like a used BMW X3, they have super handling and plenty of room, the diesels have very good economy and performance. Perhaps your looking at new, plenty of all wheel drive cars and crossovers to choose from. Take your time. A 4x4 or an all wheel drive car will have better traction but is not inherently safer. They are just as likely to slide off the road or crash as any other car and at this time of year will also need appropriate tyres.

not really true that i'm a BMW fan, see my sig. i'm really a skoda fan that fancied something different the last time i changed a car, and I was in the lucky position to have a little extra cash. Love the BM most of the time but it's not really practicle for my purposes. - carry a bit of stuff about with me, live in the counrty, 35 mile commute over hill roads (or 50mls by a roads). Live in the country all my life and had plenty "real" 4x4's in the past (landrovers, fourtraxs etc) so I know all about there capabilities and the difference decent tryres can make.

Just in a bit of a dillema just now as to wheter to stick on winter tyres for the short term or just bite thebullet and change thecar early. I drive about 25K miles a year and one of my prime critea is low running costs - which, believe it or not, the BM has. This is really the only thing that puts me of any 4x4.

Oh and another 1" of snow last night. we had a foot on the 22/23rd and I think we have had at least a little every day since, including 2 or 3" yesterday. Festive maybe but the novelty has worn off.............

Well, I would swap for months of snow, it would be big excuse to take out my Toyota Landcruiser or Volvo 6x6 all of the time and leave the other all wheel drives an 4x4 at home. We seam to just get months of rain lately, even when it showed snow on the recent forecast we received mainly rain, though we did get just enough to ice over my yard. We are much higher up than the surrounding area and normally get it when down below does not but it missed us mainly, while al the other hills got a bit of a splattering. I think that we must have been just at the very fringe of the weather belt.

I have the same problem with my baby Beemer. No boot (I carry equipment too) and a bit rubbish in snow (I spend a lot of time in the North East and Scotland).

I am amazed at the running costs too. Very reasonable and BMW have looked after me superbly. Mind you I use a dealership that is the sole business for the owner (David Holmes), not some large chain.

Put snow tyres on and let me know if they work. That way I can save up for a 3 series without worry :D

Amanda,

Just buy your BMW 3 Series 330D. You will be fine with snow tyres on in the winter.

i am happy that Manchester wouldn’t be a problem, but my folks up in the North East are snowed in at the mo. The street where they live is impassable to anyone with even a fwd.

Still, I will wait to see what BMW are going to do with offers this quarter, I know Audi are doing cheap finance on A4 pcps, but they have a new version of the 3.0 with loads of torques and I don’t know when it will go into the A4.

another 3 or 4 " of white sh**e today. just as well all the showrooms are shut today or I might have done something rash :o

My issue is not traction, it's stopping ....................

more snow - another 2" last night - in the car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the window on the 3 door 1er drops slightly to clear the door frame then (normally) closes automatically. It has been know to go out of sync before if the windows are frozen and I can only assume that teh anti trap device kicked in and opened teh window when I turned my back and locked up last night. At least the car was still there this morning!

You're probably better-off with a 4 x4 full-stop for a number of reasons.

Apart from the bigger wheels, more and better gear ratios, descent control systems, just better cabin design would be sufficient to get one.

From recollection, the smaller beemers didn't have the best driving position. Pedals are off-set, relative to the seat, to left hand side of driver foot-well in order to accomodate front offside wheel arch intrusion. So if you're a bit on the tall-side, like me, with the seat in a reasonable position to ensure adequate foward visibility, you might have had trouble hitting the brake -pedal square-on. This obviously isn't good for sensitive application, which is required in the current weather condition, or come to that, good for your physiology, particularly you're back, if you do high mileages.

This design defect is common with a lot of cars, but it seems that good cockpit ergonomics is something totally escapes the Type Approval Johnnies at the Department of Transport.

The wifes Fester will be getting traded for something with four wheel drive later this year, if I didn't have the van we wouldn't have driven anywhere over the last couple of weeks due to the Mazda simply refusing to move!

I want a Defender but I doubt that will be approved, probably Tiguan, CRV or something along those lines.

That would be my ideal but unfortunatly running costs for the other 11 months rule this option out.

Well the baby got me to work this morning - with 200kg of tractor weights in the boot. Certainly helps the tracion but doesn't make it any less twitchy at the back ;)

So what do you reckon/guess the weights plus Winter tyres would be like?

would be a brilliant combination - unfortunatly no one seems to have winter tyres left.............

edit. noboby is going anywhere here today. Borders was in total lock down this morning with all major routes blocked at some point - if you can get to them!
