New car - how to clean ready for paint protection?

Featured Replies

So, my intention is to get some sort of protection (probably werkstat acrylic) on the paint work asap once I get the car home. Is it likely I need to get rid of any products used by the garage in the PDI? Can I just shampoo and then crack on with the werkstat?

Might be worth giving it a quick claying - although I would hope that there shouldn't be too much contamination to remove from a new car.

You should also consider asking the supplying garage not to do anything at all to the bodywork as part of PDI - there is quite a chance that their valeters will do more harm than good when removing any shipping protection etc and throwing on a layer of cheap wax.

If you want the job doing right do it yourself as the saying goes!

That's what I thought until Simon(Baker21) did mine , less than 75 miles on the clock & you should have seen the dirt that came off the paintwork, the glass was even worse, maybe as a result of the fall out from the big diesel engined ferry !

Claying is a must TBH

Good Luck

+1 for claying. Any contamination on the paint must be removed, or you just end up swirling the finish as you grind in surface contamination. Pretty sure this is why some dealers cannot prep a car properly.

Definite clay, but importantly wash with two bucket method from the start to keep future defects to a minimum & as been said don't let the dealers loose on It.

thanks all.

So, there isn't anything on the paint from the factory then - just any contaminants it might pick up on the way that I'll need to remove?

I think I'll definitely ask the dealer not to do anything with the paintwork - seems daft to run the risk of someone getting a bad start on the paint!

Very good site to look at for any questions relating to cleaning cars www.detailingworld.co.uk

I would get the dealer to only remove the transport film and do nothing else, that way you can prep the car yourself, I assume you have all the items you need? Do you have anything other than Werkstat as it's not that durable?

What's the colour of your new car mate?

Sorry I haven't written anything up on DW as yet mate but I am just going through a new process which I am awaiting some confirmation on so please bear with me but here is a teaser of the final results after some TLC from me and also no prep from the dealer, have to say I was impressed with the condition of the paintwork from the factory:

I'm quite the opposite on this :peek:

I use the Werkstat acrylic on my silver Octavia. I think It great, easy to apply between coats, looks good & the last time I put a coat on was possibly 4mths ago (as I've run out) & Its still beading well.

Predictably it is a race blue. I thought Werkstat was pretty durable - although I've not used it before. I have been reading the guides on polishedbliss and it seems like a wax might not be the best option on a mid tone paint.

Its only a guideline on PB. A wax will be ok for the blue. Ultimately Its down to you which to use. People have their own preferances.

As for the werkstat I think It Is quite durable with 3+ coats on, but the beauty Is the exceptional ease of applying & I haven't found any drama applying in hot/cool conditions.

:D I think we will always have a divided opinion on this, but I must say I'm going to try to experiment a little & sample different products inc Zaino as you never know I could find something that will sway me away from the Jeffs  .

I clayed my bran new Octavia just before I sealed it with Diamondbrite and was suprised at the amount of dirt it still took off after I had washed it twice!
