Breakdown Cover

Featured Replies

Now that my free three year's cover has expired on the furby, I'm starting to think about sorting cover out.

This is brought on my a work colleague currently being stranded in a lay-by 10 miles away with a lack of exhaust, and a distinct lack of any breakdown cover

So, any suggestions for who to go with? AA? RAC? Is there really any difference between the big companies?

Buy a new car.

That's one option that's crossed my mind, Andy. Unfortunately I took out a four year loan to buy the car. If it had been 3 years, I'd have been in a vRS of one shape or another by now :)

Can you get anything through your insurance?

I used to have AA membership before we both got skodas and used them a few times. Don't think they are the cheapest though.

I'm looking for joint cover for me and SWMBO - preferably something that will cover us in other cars and/or as passengers...

You should be able to get enough for a 3 year old car to clear the remainder of the 4 year loan and form a small deposit. I have done that a couple of times as I get very bored with a car by 3 years.

How did you manage that, J? Did they write and offer it to you?

Britannia Rescue generally scores pretty high in satisfaction surveys - and you can get a discount if you're a member of one of their "affiliates".

As a quick example I had my previous car and my wifes car both covered with Brittania Rescue through L+V insurance, total cost

I've got Norwich Union Rescue cover for my Octavia and SWMBO's Felicia. Cover level is Joint Personal which covers either of us driving any car, and includes rescue, recovery, at home and onward travel. Cost was

Following my clutch pedal snapping, I've sorted out breakdown through Tesco (which is underwritten by Green Flag) and starts from 33 quid I think, as well as 500 ClubCard points. Used them once ;) and couldn't fault them and it covers any driver of the car :D Would have gone through the insurance route (also with Tesco) but I have a feeling I might be moving to LV in February :D

Upgrade your bank account? My Lloyds TSB current account gives me AA cover including home start. :)

My TSB account includes some form of AA cover - never really looked into it. If it might offer home start and all that stuff then it might be worth investigating... :)

It will include at least roadside cover :) The Gold and Platinum accounts have I think more benefits

I f you collect Tesco clubcard points you can trade them in against RAC cover and you only have to "pay" 25% of the value of the cover.

also if you breakdown in tesco's car park then they will give you use of their free recovery service, think its with greenflag. There's a few other companies that do it too,
