Fuel pump - to run or not to run?

Featured Replies

Tried a search on this but can't find anything. Ever since we've had the car (5 years), the fuel pump has run for a few seconds every time the drivers door is opened. I've always thought that this was correct, to provide an initial pressurisation of the fuel system. It's now stopped running when the door is opened, but runs for about 20 seconds when the ignition is switched on - which it has always done. But even if I don't wait for the pump to run, (go straight round to starter on), the car starts instantly, as it always has. I'm now wondering if the pump is supposed to run when the door is opened - if it doesn't so what? If there is a fault, I guess it must be between the door switch and fuel pump relay, but is it worth trying to fix??

are you sure its the fuel pump ?

i've never heard of any car, let alone a Skoda, where the fuel pump runs on opening the drivers door

It certainly sounds the same as the fuel pump, it comes from the fuel tank area. I'm sure I saw it posted on here some time ago about the pump running when the door was opened. It also (used to) run occasionally if the door was left open when working on the car, like it was on a pressure switch or timer.

The pump always used to run on my 1.4 16v when I opened the drivers door.

I would suspect that the door switch may be faulty. Does the interior light work as it should when you open the door?

mine seems to run when i open the door aswell

Interior light works ok, I'm wondering if something has happened because of the cold weather?

Like wise. But if you wind the windows down from the outside and try and start it, it will still work even without the 1st priming proceduer.

All our Fabia's used to do it

Full marks to ExAudiSi, the door switch is playing up. I know the remedy, but will wait until the weather warms up a bit. Thanks for all replies
