LOVE MY FABIA VRS BUT WHY 35 MPG

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Had my Fabia VRS since new in June 2005 and motored 70,000+ miles in it. Bought this after owning Impreza WRX and was still impressed by it's performance. Couldn't believe my rear tyres didn't need replacing until 57,000 miles - is that some sort of record?

Only bug bear with it until recently was the upholstery - seems to attract dirt like a magnet!

Big bugbear recently is that fuel consumption has gone crazy - at latest fill-up I calculated average of 34.9mpg. power still seems to be there OK. Car been serviced regularly at main dealer, fuel filter changed, timing belt changed at 4 years old. Dealer doesn't know whats wrong and is talking about putting together a programme of repairs to find the problem. Anyone else had this with Fabia VRS?. Even on motorways in 6th gear at steady 70 only recording just over 40mpg - this has been going on for some months now and it's hurting my pocket!

Help!!

My first port of call would be a MAF sensor...

Sounds like good advice as ever from Jabba. The simple test is to disconnect the sensor, and if the car runs the same, it's shot. If it gets worse, the sensor is OK. The connector is next to the air box, however the clip you have to release is in the underside! I've found one of the Z-shaped Allen keys you get with IKEA flat-packs works best...

It's probably not a bad idea to get a new air filter, as that will help whether there's an underlying issue or not, and you'll also need to be aware that MPG will drop in the cold anyway, as the fuel companies switch to a less-efficient winter mix for diesel. But you ought to be seeing a good 40 MPG on average even with a leaden right foot, and 50-60+ cruising at motorway speeds.

Hope you get it sorted!

I would go with MAF as they often fail without throwing out a fault code. Dealer plugs in magic box, which says no faults, dealer believes magic box, closes bonnet and takes your money. Also, air filter change schedule is nonsense. Forget 40,000 miles and stick a new air filter in every 10,000 miles or 12 months. Check your brakes aren't binding.

Thanks to all of you for your input - I just hope that replacing the MAF sensor (a) works and (B) doesn't cost too much! The advice re the air filter will also be followed.

Thanks guys!
