Gear change indicator

Featured Replies

Just purchased a new Octavia 1.4TSI Elegance manual estate, non-maxidot. According to the manual there should be a gear change recommendation indicator top right of the display. I can't find anything that says the display is Maxidot only. Does anyone else have this issue?

Maxidot only I'm afraid. (also think this might be DSG only but not sure)..

Our Audi S3 has the gear change indicator (and it was a pita until it was turned off) but I can't find any option for it on the Skoda. I suspect that it's one of those "optional market specific" features that the owners manual is full of.

I think there are more features missing from my Skoda than are actually included if I take the manual as a guide of everything that is potentially available.

Well I thought that, but the brochure is pretty clear about the feature:

I can't find anything to suggest it relates to the optional display.

The dealer seems to be equally clueless

That's new. Certainly wasn't on my order brochure.

Well I thought that, but the brochure is pretty clear about the feature:

The Audi one is turned off and on via the right side (wiper) stalk controls. I would assume that if the feature is present anywhere on your vehicle that's the place to find it.

I also spotted this in my brochure, and wondered if it was present on the vRS?

That feature isn't in the brochure from when I ordered my car, so presumably it's something that's been added since you ordered the car...

It first appeared in the 1st Oct 2009 brochure.

I took delivery a week before Xmas so I would expect the feature to be on the car if it was in the brochure from Oct. I'll give Skoda a call direct on Monday.

I also purchased a 1.4 tsi in December, (non maxidot) the gear change facility works in my car and appears in the top right hand corner. It is supposed to provide optimum economy. Personally I prefer to listen to the engine when I change gear. Quite a useless bit of kit really!!

You took delivery just before Xmas, but when did you order? Are you seriously expecting something to be on your car that was not available when you ordered? Also, the brochure states that is may not be accurate and all specifications should be checked with the dealer...

Personally I don't want the car to tell me when to change gear.... and I remember years ago, my dad had an Audi with this that couldn't be turned off, he ended up putting tape over the indicator light on the dash...

It's listed as a feature in the November supplement to the manual...should therefore at least expect any car manufactured after this was published to reflect the changes listed. I ordered my car without Maxidot, but it has since become standard with DSG on vRS and it came with it - once something's been added to the production line it will be put on all cars, not just those ordered after a certain date!

I ordered it, 3 weeks before delivery so mid-November. I didn't order any special features and had a choice of a couple of colour options (I was in a hurry). I did thought expect the car to come with equipment listed in the brochure.

I agree it's not exactly essential kit, but having watched my wife drive 2 miles in 3rd gear (mainly because the engine is so quiet) it it would be handy!

I picked up my new manual petrol vRS just before Xmas (with Maxidot) and it has the gear number in top right corner. Initially shows the gear you're in then over certain revs shows the next recommended gear with an arrow sign. Like someone else said, I think at my age I know when to change gear - depends whether I'm in economy or attack mode !!!

I ordered a 1.8 tsi se towards the end of October and I'm pretty sure the brochure mentions gear change recommendation on tsi models. As maxidot is an option on my particular model i'm expecting to have the gear change recommendation since it was included in the list of specifications on that particular model.

Yes just had a look in the Skoda Octavia Brochure Edition: UK 10/09 and it catergorically states Standard Equipment (over S) Gear Change Recommnedation (on 1.4 TSI and 1.8TSI engines only). Hope this helps..

Does that mean I get my money back for the maxidot as I had to order it on 30th September.... I'm guessing that the changes of that are somewhere between slim and none :-)

Also, if you got your car in three weeks you can pretty much guarantee that it was pre-built so could have been made before the brochure changes came into effect...

You're probably right I guess it was pre-build, but I would expect to be told if there was going to be a difference between the brochure and the delivery model. Also as the there was a one week shipping delay (on what I was promised) the car did come from Germany so it isn't old stock that's been sitting around in the UK.

When I asked the dealer initially told me that it was a Maxidot only option. then when I pointed out the brochure they hocked it up to the computer to check. Finally they promised to speak to Skoda and get back to me (that was over a week ago).

I'll speak directly to Skoda on Monday and post the response.

I just purchased a new Octavia 1.6CR Elegance manual hatchback, non-maxidot. It was ordered in early November and was already pre-built (was in Germany). It has the gear indicated in top right of display, with an up or down arrow together with the recommended gear if it thinks you are in the wrong gear (even though the brochure said this feature was only on the 1.4TSI & 1.8TSI engines).

It may be useful as a reminder as the engine is very smooth and quiet, but as has been said before on the forum, it recommends a change up at very low revs! It is definitely not set up for the ruuning in period as the engine would not take 5 gear when the display said change into 5 th.

If the feature wasn't there I wouldn't regard it as a great loss.

i've got it on my 2011 car and i cant think why you'd want it, its a pain in the @rse to be honest

Hi

Got it on mine too.

Could live without it though.

Stops me trying to changing into sixth I've only got five gears.

If you want to have a look at your seat belt near where its bolted to inner sill, the tag gives a date when belt was made car won't be much different bet yours was made before you think.

+1

Then again if you do change as instructed you will probably get more than the 34 mpg mine is returning, but you may well lose the will to live.

taking car to dealer in few days, will ask them if a software update will display the gear change indicator..

Thanks..
