Superb or Octavia?

I intend to take advantage of the forthcoming Scrappage Scheme (Ireland) and change my car for either an Octavia or Superb. I have been to the main dealers and the best that I have got is an Octavia with a (new) 1.6 common rail diesel engine which is quiet, refined & torquey with 105HP. This model is the "Elegance" which has all the "bells & whistles" and comes in at approx €19,500 to include scrappage. I also looked at the Superb - "Greenline" which apparently has an older "Direct Injection Engine" 1.9 which I thought had less torque and was a bit noisier but at the end f the day - wasn't bad, this came in at approx €20,500 to include scrappage. The difference in road tax between the 2 is €105 for the 1.6 or €155 for the 1.9. The main question is which would you choose? My ideal would be to have the 1.6 (105BHP-Octavia) or 2.0 (110BHP Yeti) both Common Rail fitted to the Superb which might or might not happen. Currently with the Irish Scrappage scheme here only Class A & B are eligible which only caters for the current greenline model and excludes the 140&170 BHP models as they fall in under Class C due to emissions. I would be grateful for any comments.

Howya Horse, you are getting a whole lot more metal for your money with the superb but its the engine that would make me think twice. If you wait for the new superb estate, that may come with the newer CR diesels, I can't see the 1.9 going into a brand new model straight off the production line when its almost obsolete. The Octy is also a fine car, I have 285,000kms on my '06 2.0tdi and its still going strong.

I chose the Superb over the Ocky for the legroom in the back.

With teenage kids and sometimes nanna in the back, makes it very comfortable for them.

Superb by a long way . Although I am uncertain as to whether I can recommend one with any other engine than the 170cr diesel as this suits the car so well.

id say go for superb :thumbup:

It's difficult to choose for you as we don't know your requirements for the car. If you want sheer space, go for the Superb - unbeatable in that area. However, if you're only going to use a conventional amount of room, then the Elegance Octy will be an all-round better bet, due to refinement, bells & whistles, etc.

I had an Octy (PD DSG) Elegance before my current Superb 170CR DSG Elegance and I loved it. Occasional five-adult loads were OK, but in the main it was a two-up car and ideal for that use. The Superb has such a huge increase in room it's hardly believeable, but if you're not going to take advantage of that, the Octy will be a more pleasurable day-to-day drive, IMO.

I changed to the Superb because I wanted to and I could, but in your position, the use of available space would be the deciding factor for me, I think. As you've included mention of the Yeti, perhaps this isn't such a big factor after all? :)

Unfortunately for customers the venerable 1.9 soldiers on for the time being in the new Combi, although they are replacing the 140 PD with the CR followed by the Octavia in June I believe.

So for the time being anyway the Yeti is the only Skoda available with the 110 CR.

I passed on my 2.0 tdi 140L&K Octy estate to my wife and it has only done 15k miles at 18 months old. So I have the direct comparison sitting in my driveway. the refinement of the Superb is way better than the Octy. The engine is much quieter and there is much less windnoise. The trade off is that I also do not need all the space in the car but I soon got used to it and it is not a big problem

But you're comparing to a Superb 170CR Elegance - not OP's Greenline option.

I'm not putting the 1.9 down but I don't see the point in purchasing an engine at the end of its cycle just as its about to be replaced. The 2.0CR should have equally low emissions and be a lot more refined, maybe it would be worth waiting.

That's the best time to buy the engine. All the development work has been done, all the faults ironed out or known about. New motors are unknown quantities and by no means are they guaranteed to be better than the ones they replace. Far from it. in fact. 1.9 TDi is a great motor.

I love my Superb, but if it was a choice between the Greenline 1.9 and a fully specced up Octavia Elegance, I'd go for the Octavia. I had an Octavia 2.0TDI PD DSG Elegance before the Superb and loved it - I'm not sure I'd have loved a Greenline after the Octy, I'd have missed the toys.

As I said, I'm not saying the 1.9 is a bad engine. I would rather go for the newer technology although I do take your point about possible teething problems in brand new engines/cars.

It speaks volumes for VAG's state of development that their 'eco' models use one of the oldest engines still made by them. They have been forced to abandon Pumpe Duese technology for reasons of refinement and emissions, but certainly not fuel economy. If you can live with the vibration, then the PD105 is a brilliant engine, especially in Greenline trim, and the demo car I borrowed recently didn't feel slow, but I would worry about overtaking in such a big car with 'just enough' oomph. It's been 5 years since I last drove in the Republic, and at that time drivers were very considerate in allowing faster cars to pass by using the hard shoulders so it may not be such a big issue, but in GB, I would want at least a 140bhp motor in my Superb.

I've just taken delivery of a Superb Greenline (see other post) - I too agonised whether to take advantage of the 'No Vat' scheme on Octy's over here and was thinking of the new TSi engined version with DSG, however, when it came to the showroom visit, comparing the Octy versus the Superb in terms of space and kit there was no competition - I was comparing SE spec Octy against the Greenline. The PD engine wasn't an issue as my current car then was the PD 130 in the Mark 1 Superb. The Octy is also at the end of its current model life, whereas the Superb is at the beginning, and I have to say it does show.

I have just come back from a trip to Tunbridge Wells and Maidstone in fairly heavy traffic - fuel computer shows 64 mpg average for the morning - not bad! The 1.9 engine installation is quieter than in my previous car, the gearing is interesting in that 1-3 seem to be geared for reasonable accelleration, 4th seems to be where 5th used to be and 5th is a genuine overdrive, giving around 1800 revs at 70mph. It's plenty quick enough for normal driving, but obviously not as fast as the 140 or 170 diesels. It depends what you want really, space, reasonable amount of kit and stunning fuel economy, or better performance and slightly less fuel economy!

The choice is yours - I made mine last week and am extremely happy with it!

Thanks for the replies - much appreciated. I know that Rosesteve has just purchased one and is very happy with it and He came up with a good point in that the Current Octavia is at the end of its life where as the new Superb is just beginning.........................worth considering.

I had a similar dilemma when my company provided 115,000 mile Octy II 1.9Tdi became due for replacement.

At the time (Dec 2009) the facelifted Octy was not available and likely to remain so for 1-2 months. Ideally, I would have chosen a facelifted Octy 2.0Tdi 140 hatchback in Elegance trim, however, I instead chose a Superb II 1.9Tdi in 'S' trim wih optional metallic paint, Bolero CD/radio, rear side blinds, three spoke leather steering wheel, headlamp washers and cruise control. I decided I could live without climate and reversing sensors.

I've now covered nearly 32k miles and am very pleased with the car especially the long distance comfort, build quality, economy and ride/handling. The car was remapped early on and has transformed the way the car drives. My average economy is 54-55mpg (actual) which gives me an easy 700+mile range.

The Superb II is a rarer sight on the roads than the Octy, while I prefer the speedo markings at 10mph intervals, against 20mph on the facelifted Octy.

The only downside is the time it takes to handwash the car compared with the Octy (the Superb has a lot more metal) and the higher BIK tax band of 21% compared against 18%.

When the Superb is due for replacement in 2012 (4 years/120k miles) I shall probably choose a new Octy hatch with the 1.6Tdi CR engine. This will save me a fair amount per month in company car tax. The interior space of the Superb is a luxury, however, most of the time the Octy is plenty big enough.

I used to have Octy L&K TDI 2.0 manual, moved to SuperbII TSI1.8 DSG7 three months ago. I do not think I would ever move back to Octy
