Bi-Xenons

Featured Replies

Hello

Can anybody explain how the Bi-xenons on the Superb work?

On inspection I had come to the conclusion that my 2005 Elegance didn't have bi-xenons as it has a standard bulb in the full beam position... However I noticed today when parked up against a wall that the dipped (xenon) beam changes when full beam is activated, aswell as the other 'normal' bulb lighting up.

So What's that all about? Why have both?

Cheers,

Bi Xenon's have a shutter blocking the top of the bulb off when on dipped beam, this shutter lifts when you go on to main beam.

The normal halogen high beam bulb is basically there for when you flash your headlights - Xenon's do not like to be turned on and off quickly as it drastically shortens their life.

I wasn't aware that the halogen bulb lit up with the main beam though, i thought it was only when they were flashed - i agree it's pretty pointless them being on at the same time as a Xenon main beam.

I have the Xenon lights on mine, and the Xenon on dipped beam is the main 'bulb' dome in the unit, and when using full beam, another bulb above the side light lights up.

You will know if you have Xenon, as there is NO headlight levelling switch next to the dashboard dimmer roller by the light switch. Xenon lights level automatically.

The Mk2 has it, dont think the Mk1 did.

Yep - The spec sheet listed it as standard on the elegance, that's why I checked.

Ah ha! Thanks for that. I wondered if the aditional bulb was for flashing purposes.

The Superb MK1 Head Lamp is Bi-Xenon, this means Dipped and High Beam (Xenon would just be dipped normally). The Head Lamp also benefits from an additonal Halogen Aux Main Beam which adds to the light output and the only real reason for this is due to the styling and design layout of the Halogen version Head Lamp.

Would be a lot of dead space within the lamp creating condensation pockets, etc if the Aux Main Beam pocket was not there........

Elegence Spec = Xenon's

Comfort / Classic = Halogen's unless Xenon's specced as an upgrade
