Strange loss of power

Featured Replies

Was coming home early hours of this morning, through pretty bad fog. Was in forth and went to change to fith, as i took my foot off the clutch it seemed as though my turbo had disappeared. There was just no turbo power at all.

My first thought was that an inter cooler pipe had popped off, so didnt think too much off it and parked the car up for the night. Ill add at this point that there were no warning lights on the dash at all.

This morning i popped the bonnet and had a good poke arround to see if any pipes had come off, started car to see if i could here anything out of the ordinary, but nothing. So took the car for a spin only to find that there was no problem any more. Turbo power was back to normal as if there had nevr been a problem in the first place.

Could there be some sort of 'over boost' system or something that would disable the turbo in the event of a problem?

Thanks

Sounds like it went into limp mode...probably due to as you say overboost protection. Mine does it v v rarely when booting it going up an incline.

Check VNT operating rod is free to move. Sticking VNT causes overboost and limp mode.

Thanks Moggy. How do i check its opperation? Is it just a case of moving with hands or does car need to be running/reved to see opperation?

and what does VNT stand for? Is there an abreveation list somewhere on the site?

i seem to have the same problem anymore help

Overboosts are pretty common on the 110TDi, so pop over into octavia-i and do a search.

Mine suffers from it, power cycling the ignition will generally remove the limp home mode (remember the steering lock will come on, so do this carefully!).

I remove the vacuum hose from the n75 valvem, and suck down it. With your hand on the back of the turbo you should feel the actuator rod moving in, and then releasing smoothly when you stop stucking and allow normal atmospheric pressure back down the hose. I seem to have to such pretty hard on my mine to get it to move, but I am sure that my VVT is are bit sooted up.

Some ppl say giving the car a double helping of red-ex fuel injector cleaner on a pretty empty tank can help, I tried it and not sure it make much difference.

On mine I sometimes feel the power dropping off on a long hill, so it might be worth checking for vacuum leaks on the pipework too.

VVT = Variable Vane Technology. It is essentially designed to work at lower airflow, and thus pickup quicker with less lag, and as the airflow from the exhaust gasses increase, the vanes move (if they fail to move that is the cause of the overboost error).

hi sorry to sound stupid but did your eml come on as mine has i took it to a skoda dealer who just pluged some thing into the car then told me to apply the brakes a couple of times then told me every thing was ok but lo and behold about a week later it came back on and i have the same problem
