So the Bedford Rascal was mid Engined?

Featured Replies

A sleeper I've always wanted to make is a Bedford Rascal Van!

They're mid engined and although I realize it'd take a full fabrication, I've always thought it'd be fun/funny to drop a 2litre turbo or something of the like in it.. maybe a V8? lol.

I have nooooooo idea how it'd handle, Are they rear wheel drive? If not it doesn't matter does it as if ya shoving an engine in i'm sure it wouldn't take much more (in the grand scheme of things) to make it so.

Aerodynamics might be an issue.. as would tipping over (demonstrated on Top Gear).. but maybe with more weight and a lower center of gravity it's be better than expected?

Just thought I'd share, it's a great mental image.... or maybe it;s just mental.

Rob :D

I had my first taste of rear wheel drifting in one those years ago.

Wicked laugh tbh

The one I used was modded one, something like a 1.4 in what was ment to be a 1L

The do end up on there sides quite easy aswell lol

Yarrrr!!!

My mrs had 1 , theyre bloody scary with the micky mouse engine , braking is ...interesting in the wet , scary idea

richard hammond flipped one in a top gear challenge where they had to buy £1000 vans, he took a corner too fast and over it went, although i think that was a suzuki badged version

we once got 12 of us in the back of my mates dads......that cured the problem of tipping it  it was like a weeble on wheels.....a lovely bright blue too

Yarrrr!!!

awesome noise

Crying out for a Hayabusa lump to go in

I had a works one from a hotel many many moons ago, and it fell over half way round a roundabout on the way to pick up stuff from a bakery, me and another guy that were in it then picked it up and popped it back on its wheels before finishing the journey. Rubbish vans!!

lol

My mate did nearly the same thing except his was handbrake related, showing off for the boys years ago, it ended up on it's side we just picked it up and he drove off lol.

I remember at work in the late 60's and 70's our fleet included Commer vans, which had the same engine arrangement as the Rascals,

they were useless in every dept. The engine cover was between the two front seats, never fitted correctly and always smelt of petrol and exhaust fumes, could of been lethal but Heh, Ho, there was no Health & Safety rules then.

Find the top gear episode where the hamster races one of these and i think you'll get the unstable idea.

I've seen Hammond tip one over but if your doing an engine swap you could lower, stiffen etc etc :D

I can't see myself ever having the money to build something (or the skills) but I do love the idea.. and love that i'm not the only one going by the YouTube clips!
