Interesting point of view re tuning engines

Featured Replies

I'm organising a local dyno day and I called to see these guys as they're one of two local places with a dyno:

http://www.shredindustries.co.nz/

The guy was very confident and talked a lot! He had some interesting opinions and to be honest he lost me several times - but basically what he said was that the Kiwis are 5-10 years ahead of the poms with engine tuning technology! Interesting indeed.

He reckoned by fitting a proper exhaust and FMIC, and an aftermarket from Link he could get 250bhp at the wheels and higher torque from the standard engine and turbo.

He said they're more about lower boost and messing with compression and stuff. This is where he lost me :D

Discuss!

Oh and he didn't like my Carbonio intake - said it was a waste of time - which has been proven to be true but it makes a nice noise :D

While I was there a Skyline (mid 90's one) pulled up with a mahoosive turbo - so big they'd had to poke it through the bonnet. Apparently it makes nearly 600bhp at the wheels :o

Every body knows that changing the exhaust and fitting a FMIC alters the compression of an engine. emoticon-0136-giggle.gif (I love htis smilie)

Oh it alters the stroke and bore as well.

Sounds like he knows his engines :)

thats doesnt sound right to me,

adding a FMIC, Exhaust etc will change the flow characteristics of an engine making it more efficient. To change the compression ratio you need to change the pistons/rods etc.

haha 5 years ahead of the poms, lol.

well that makes them pretty much 5 years ahead of the rest of the world, since we are doing the same as the rest of europe/asia and the USA.

That's what he said - that the Kiwis are leading the tuning world - primarily on Japanese cars but also the V6 and V8 GM/Ford lumps.

He cited the fact that NZ has the world's fastest Nissan GTR. Apparently!

... were you?

Sounds complete crap to me!

The Americans are the leaders in 20vT tuning, and most of the UK companies use American kit (APR, Revo, GIAC etc).

The place wasn't called "Garage of the Conchords" or something, were they called Jermaine, Bret or Murry?

I reckon Mil's Fabia would have it..........:giggle:

That's the fella! Apparently the long beak is great for picking up bolts that drop into the engine :D

And can also be used as a Lambda probe up the exhaust for Checking Air/fuel ratio's ... :D

[sniff snuff] I smell male bovine faeces!!!

Serious tuning on the RB26DETT has been taking it to over 1_000 (one thousand) bhp wheels, without the need for a turbo so big you have to cut holes in the bonnet! In fact, 600 is possible whilst retaining the stock sequential twin turbos!

i can tell you from expierience it most certainly isn't!!!! some people have run up to 600 bhp on the stock internals, but not the stock turbos

this or similar are required to run 500-600bhp

Garret GT2860-5 turbos

Apexi power fc

Full exhaust with downpipes and decat

Hks spf air intakes

Hks intercooler kit with hardpipes

Hks oil cooler with filter relocation

nismo afms

Tomei fuel pres reg

Apexi boost controller

i've heard that folding the rear seats flat can give you an extra 50bhp too... good times...

although those link engine management units look very well spec'd i bet they cost a fortune, i can't help feeling that the fella is trying to re-invent the wheel by trying to tune up a 20v, it's all been done before, and besides, even if he could get 250 horses from the standard turbo, how long would last before it blows up? and to be perfectly frank, him saying that they are 5 years ahead is utter nonsense :dull:

He was talking $1000 for the Link plus $1000+ dyno time for tuning :o That's in the region of 750 quid
