Diesel mk VI Golf

Featured Replies

A colleague and I have a Golf to use for a couple of days. Seems nice but I expected it to be a CR 1.6 and its gruffness has surprised me. It is also a 5 spd gearbox.

How can I easily tell what engine it is?

check the reg on the dvla website

5 speed gearbox means it IS a 1.6CR. Next diesel engine up from that is the 2.0CR140 which has a 6 speed.

I thought VW produced a 2.0l 110hp engine? or do Skoda not have access to it?

They stopped putting the 2.0 110 in the Golf once the 1.6 came out.

Could be a 1.9 TDI as that has a 5 speed and would explain the gruff noise perhaps?

What's the engine code on the sticker on the boot floor?

That's what I was trying to work out. It was a brand new car (<20 miles) and being a while since I've driven a 1.9 or a CR diesel I couldn't work out if it was quieter than normal or what. I didn't think it would be a 1.9 but wasn't sure.

Nice car, the performance was fine, it was comfortable, drove well, only minor comments regarding the steering wheel, eurgh. Lack of stereo and other controls was a surprise considering the otherwise reasonable spec of the car but the wheel itself was revolting - came out of a dodgem compared to the later mkV golf matches I have driven in the past.

And the speedo... Major and minor increments at 10 and 5mph all the way up to 80 then jumps to 20 and 10mph. So unless you spot it (not obvious) you could be happly driving along at what you think is highs 80s but in fact you're doing nearly a ton which is a little higher than you wanted to be...

That's the same as my VRS. Been caught out once or twice with that.
