Anyone managed to pick one up from Aldi?

Yes I queued up this morning to pick one up, Medion MD95000.

There were about 10 sold to people in the queue and the store only had 30, and will not be getting any more. If you want one it's probably best to go to ALDI A.S.A.P.

First impressions are that it is a very good buy (might not have a fashionable name but performs well and is great value, which is more or less the same reasons I bought a Skoda).

Set up is very easy since the navigation software is pre-loaded onto the 256Mb card, so it really is a case of switching on and installing straight away.

Used it to get home, and it was very straightforward to put in the destination address. Route chosen was spot on and the voice clear and concise. I like the fact that it shows a moving map as well as the next turn arrow indicator at the same time. There is also a 3D map mode which looks OK, but will probably stick with the overhead.

Interesting to see the mph readout which is probably more accurate than the speedo. As expected when set cruise to 50, the GPS read a steady 47.

The PDA itself seems fine. Never used one before, but having used Microsoft packages at work, the PDA is very simple to use with pocket versions of Word, Excel, Outlook, Calendar etc. All I need now is a pocket version of Project.

One thing that really impresses is that everything you will need is included:

Original software on 5 CDs, docking station / PC USB connector, 'bendy arm' holder for car, car charger, normal charger (including european 2 pin plug adaptor), bicycle holder, earphones, carry case and a few other little bits.

The only thing it doesn't do is 'point to point' navigation for walking / off-road cycling since everything is based around the road map. I'm hoping that since the PDA / GPS will run any software, that there are some ordnance survey type maps and software available for off road use / recorded track facility etc.

If anyone can point me in the right direction (no pun intended) for the above mentioned type software (preferably with an altitude display), I would appreciate it. Also I am hoping there is some way of highlighting / warning of fixed speed cameras ?

Hope this helps anyone looking at buying one of these.

Thanks a nice review, couldn't get to an Aldi Store today :(

What navigation software is supplied?

Seems good, just wish they had more stock....

Thanks for info. Memory maps look incredibly detailed for walking etc., maybe a little pricey if you want more than one area, but very impressive.

Navigation software is called Medion-Navigator, but I think I read somewhere that it is based on Navman. Will have to check out the CDs at the weekend, since all I have done so far is load off the memory card.

As far as speed camera sites go I'm not sure yet. If it is based on Navman, then maybe compatible with the data for that. Will probably have to have a bit of a play at the weekend.

OK the software is Medion-Navigator v4.2

I have had a look through the forums on www.pocketgpsworld.com, and apparently there is a compatible database for Medion-Navigator v3.1.

Hopefully this is also true for v4.2, apparently it is all down to whether the software supports 'Customisable points of interest POI'.

To be honest I'm a little bit lost, so I am hoping that someone a little bit more tech savvy than myself has bought one of these current models and will post how to upload the camera database.

Update:

Medion-navigator is rebadged Navigon software and the map is by Teleatlas as used by TomTom and Navman

(info courtesy of http://www.pocketgpsworld.com )

For the speed camera database I believe I require POI-Warner which has versions for Medion-navigator v3 & v4.

see: http://www.navigating.de/Home_en/neues.htm#news290904

the POI-Warner upgrade costs Euro 9.90

Before I pay for this POI software could someone please confirm that the following thinking is correct:

I require to upgrade my Navigator software with POI-Warner so that my navigator will recognise and then call out Points of Interest.

Then once I have the POI upgrade I can upload the speed camera database as POIs.

Is this correct ?

Right, I have also invested in one of these. Stock seems to be sticking to as I bought mine at 3.30pm on Friday and they had 4 or 5 left. Very good PDA, and the kit that is supplied with it (leads etc.) is good. The PDA seems to me to be first class and very good, with the GPS reciever being stong. Only problem with the PDA is that the instructions are less than informative, a little bit economical but they tell you what you need.

My complaints are with the navigation software which seems to be average. It has numerous roads that I know with the wrong names- made up it seems! I also found that in my town they have failed to add the pedestrianisation scheme from 8 years ago! As a result, you will be directed down the high street (pedestrian only), another street (one way), another street (no through road), many bus only roads, and it has failed to add changes to streets to the map in the centre, like a new road and a road that partly ceased to exist which is disappointing. However if you follow the way that road signs direct you the software automatically recalculates the route anyway. Strangely the ring-road completion road is included yet it was only built 3 years ago as is the M6 toll, so perhaps it is just poorly upgraded. I could understand if it was a tiny village, but not a 100,000 town. I'm going to mail the manufacturer with the faults to see if they will change it and see if they will maybe send me a free update for pointing out numerous errors. Mind you all they need to do is look at autoroute from microsoft and it would be obvious.

However in fairness the software is very good, and route planning is accurate, with good sensible routes chosen. The maps allow you to to click on them and choose the click as destination through longditude/latitude. This is useful and the postcode can also be used to enter address. Instructions are clear and consise, but maybe a little bit too talkative but this is personal choice. If the software isn't your cup of tea, Tom Tom or Pocket Autoroute can be installed instead and it would still cost less than buying some of the PDA's with Tomtom that I have seen in Maplin etc. The GPS Speedo is useful too and I can see the inaccuracies!

PDA is first class, equipment provided is superb but navigational software is slightly week at points but overall this is a minor annoyance in a very good value system.
