Weight thingy on the long driveshaft :-)

Featured Replies

Hello,

My felicia pickup has a wobble at certain speeds. I have had the balancing done and it is bang on so i was a little stumped. Then i remembered back to when i first got the truck that it developed a flapping sound. Garage took it in and when it came back he said that he had removed something that wasn't needed :wonder: from the drivers side driveshaft.

Am i right in thinking that this could be the cause of the vibrations at certain speeds?? If so does anyone know part numbers or what bit i should ask for if ordering a new one and roughly the cost of it??

Any help greatly appreciated.

Jorily list it, apparently. Could be the cause of vibration, they don't put them on for no reason, but then out of balance wheels/tyres are usually the problem.

it depends on which shafts you have... some of the later driveshafts didn't have the balance weight fitted, you can tell if you are supposed to have one because there will be a groove machined into the shaft for it

I was thinking of a missing driveshaft balance weight too.

Thanks for all the responses. Something was defintely removed and not put back (which i wasn't very happy about) so i am guessing replacing this might help to sort out the issue. Will have a gander at the driveshaft in a while and see if i am groovy or not.

The vibration happened with the old steels (which were balanced when new tyres put on) and on the new wheels i have on it which were specifically balanced to try and rid the problem.

i wouldn't think the weight would make that sort of differance. its there to dampen certain vibrations from the gearbox and unless the shaft is bent you wouldn't feel anything from it really (more to do with noise)..

describe the "wobble" does it shake the steering wheel if you hold it loosly or does it seem to come up from the floor thru the seat?

what speed does it happen at?

If it's a mass damper, that's one thing; if it's a balance weight added in preference to shaving mass of the driveshaft (which may not be perfectly balanced) then that's another thing entirely. Of course, there's no reason to think that a mass damper can't also be used as a balance weight!

a balance weight is going to be fixed permanently so it cant revolve etc. its not balancing anything being rubber mounted

Hey; no-one had previously said it was anything other than a lump of weight. Being a compound constuction makes it clear it's a mass damper.

Well the shaking comes through the steering wheel when held loosely my hands wobble, just as it does when balance is out on a wheel. Also happens at wheel balance speeds up from around 55mph roughly. It isn't violent shaking.

Wheels do not seem to be buckled and this has never been remarked on by anyone who has balanced the wheels or fitted tyres so i ruled this out.

The weight on the driveshaft does need putting back on for me anyway as i hate to have anything missing.

Would nackered bushes of any type cause this type of problem?? Trying to eliminate the cheapest things first in order to rectify the issue.

Thanks again chaps.

Tyres can go progressively out of balance as they wear - they are not perfectly balanced when made, and the counterbalancing from the weight that is added will only be right when the wheel is fitted, as new. Cheapest thing to see if it is this is to get the front wheels balanced, then you've eradicated it, one way or another.
