K&N or Piper?

Featured Replies

I am thinking of replacing the original air filter on my 2008 Octavia 1.9 TDI for a K&N or Piper.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of this type of filter and which is the best- the K&N or the Piper?

Hi, replaced mine with a Piper, THT it didn't make any difference to performance or mpg, as a result fitted an Evoms a couple of months ago................now that is a different ball game!!

Sorry for the daft question - what is an Evoms?

Sorry mate, I asked the same thing once! its an intake with cone filter for the petrol Vrs, facts and figures state it will add between 8-10 bhp to the performance because a greater volume of air is getting in to the engine. I don't no the physics but along with the re-map I have, the performance is fair better and when driven sensibly the mpg is improved. I haven't had the car dynoed yet so I can't quote numbers, but I had a head to head with a mate in his standard Vrs, baring in mind, mine is the estate, so fractionally slower (allegedlly), there was no contest! ;)

Ahh I see :D hmm shame they don't do them for the diesel!

Thanks for the info tho

Andy :)

I believe you can get a K&N cone filter for the TDI. bahnstormer runs one and said positive thigs about the gains. hes gone one step further with some crazy duck taping to seal off te intake from the heat from the engine, but thats not masively required. will try to find a pic

OK thanks dude :)

Looking to get something sorted for next month so be good to get an idea of what to do!

Piper panel, cheap, effective and easy to clean

Have to agree with Mr V8, panel filter is the best way to go. Induction kits are fine but unless they have cold ducting set up right or are inclosed then the changes are not that great.

Run a Green Cotton on the fabia for 75% of its life, changed to a BMC CDA and kept it on for a year if that, yes to rev'd more and had a little more top end poke but for the out lay a panel filter is alot cheaper.

Induction kit if you want something nice to look at under the bonnet and panel filter if you want the standard look.

i dont rate the panel filters. when i had the pipercross and carbonio scoop i noticed the grand total of........no difference in power. still it wil make it freer revving

inclosed then the changes are not that great.

i have that one covered, mines ealed off completely from the engine bay, as all decent intakes should be

vRSy I should have maybe said it better than I did lol

Unless like you said the cold feed is done right then for the out lay of the induction kit I just think you would be better off with just a panel filter. The BMC on the fabia was a big difference over the green cotton filter, felt like it was keener through out the rev range, and I should underline it "felt" so I cannot confirm that it made a power difference but I would be surprised if it didn't.

Only other car I've had a induction kit on was my saxo vts, had a K&N filter, made it sound great and again felt perker when on a RR it made 130bhp and I'm sure the saxo VTS was 120ish. The down side it would struggle at the top end on power and would not hit the same top speed that it could with the standard airfilter. Though it was probably not set up correctly.

So if you are going to do it right and want the most amount of BHP then induction kit  if you wanna be lazy and not worry about it then panel filter, chuck it in and off you go.

ITG are supposed to be a good setup

So which should I go for K&N or Piper?

I thought the lads question was which panel filter, K&N or Pipercross?

Both very good filters but personally I prefer the foam construction of the Pipercross, nice and easy to clean and its cheaper than the K&N

As for intakes I wouldnt bother unless its a full enclosed cone of panel. Leaving a cone sat in the engine bay is just asking for high intake temps voiding any gains you'd get from it, sounds alright though :p

Sy - what did you think to the code red intake? I quite liked the enclosed cone setup but never had anything to compare it against unlike yourself

I did get a gain over standard with the code red but got an even bigger gain going to the ITG.

my car took about 50 miles to adjust to the new ITG filter after the code red. it was really hesitant at first. more air into th engine means the afr will go tits up for a bit, until the ecu adapts.

I'd go for the Paper one that fits in a standard air box. Keep it clean and it will out perform any after market kit.

Can you take a couple of pics and show us all.

Cheers in advance.

The dont do one for the TDI as of yet, however they are very keen on getting the range expanded so if you were to offer you car up for some guinea pig action as i did, you could get one designed and fitted by the man him self. it shouldnt take much to convince him, if they did an intake for the TDI, there is a mass maket for them, from golf GT140/170, octavia TDI/vRS, leon TDI's/fr TDI, A3 etc
