Throttle Body Alignment

Featured Replies

I stumbled across this HOWTO on club18t.com; it looks like it originated on VW Vortex:-

Thanks to GTIAndrewK on the 'Tex for this:

So took an advise from my VW tech and he showed me how to get the throttle body alignment of my 1.8t GTI. Well, I definitly feel the difference. Car throttle feels much smoother and idles smoother as well.

how to

1. Open the hood then open the driverside door.

2. Put the key in the ignition "on" position which is just before the start position

3. Walk towards the engine and listen to your engine. It will make high pitch beep for about 1min or so. You will hear your throttle body adjusting itself.

4. When all the sounds stops. Close the hood. Get in the car. Close the door then start your engine.

5. Wait about 20sec before you move your vehicle.

TBA done.

Try this. I could definitly feel my throttle being much smoother.

It certainly made the "beep" and "click, click" noises when I tried it, so something was happening.

The question is - was it doing anything useful? What is throttle body alignment, anyway? OK, I know it's some sort of servo self-calibration, but is it going to have any major effect?

Hm, I'm curious too. Anybody?

Im gonna try this later , will report back!

is it doing anything usefull ? na not really it does if you have a fault basicaly it sets the various different throttle postions to the ecu. may be good if you have surging idle or cutting out problems etc.

Thanks for the info, big k (Karl?).

I'd sort of reached that conclusion, after not noticing any difference at all while driving to work this morning.

Cheers Big K - was going to ask my brother this as he is a "Throttle Body Engineer" for Ford at Dunton (on the R&D side) - beat that for an exciting sounding job! :p

Will try this anyway - my throttle body has been replaced after feeling "dead" and with little power.

Every now and then I still notice a lack of power, reset ignition and "whoosh" all is normal again - suspect something is not right still.
