Particulate filter regeneration

Featured Replies

Wife used the Yeti today and her journey back was about 15 miles on single carriageway country main roads, so top (5th) gear at about 50 to 60 mph. Air temp was about 2 degrees C.

When she got home she called me because the radiator fan was running. She had not noticed anything else, no warning lights, nothing.

After a short while the fan stopped.

Would this have been the particulate filter regeneration?

No, but the fan running on after switching the engine off is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.

Even with an outside air temp near freezing!

This car had not been in a traffic jam, just driven on cold country roads.

The outside temp will have no bearing on the fan running on, the engine will run at the same temperature if its -10c or +40c. The fan on my Octy2 frequently runs on for a few minutes, even in this weather.

My vote is regeneration taking place.. Why could it not be this? Nothing to worry about either way :)

It is actually not that uncommon for a fan to actually start running as you stop, because the car has suddnely lost the forced draught through the rad when you stop moving.

I have noticed the same. I suspect that the fan is programmed to run for a short time after the engine is stopped. It may be a method to reduce "hotspots" in the engine, through natural convection, when the pump has stopped turning.

Just a theory but is the turbo on the latest TDI water, rather than oil, cooled? If so, the fan may run on to help cool the turbo after driving. Previous oil cooled turbo diesels should be left to idle for a minute to help the turbo cool after higher revs. If the turbo is still oil cooled on these engines then I'll get my coat......

It is always good practice to allow any engine particularly those with turbo chargers diesel or petrol to idle for a few minutes after driving. Many engines after a run will have the cooing fan running after a drive and will continue to run after the ignition has been switched off.

Usually when the particle filter is regenerating the tick over is usually slightly higher than normal. In my car it ticks over at 1000 rpm exactly, for about 10 minutes, until it is done.

I had this with smell of burning oil seemed very hot fan went on for some time but temp gauge was normal as my post OVERHEATING trouble is I have a lot of short drives I did speak to dealer about the short drives but he said with the new common rail it would be OK.

My fan ran on one evening - same route home as it's done dozen of times, same temps (ambient and engine), speeds etc. Went back to it after a few minutes and it stopped. Not done it since.

Had to drive a good part of my 37 mile commute at a lower speed than normal due to fog.

When I got home the fans were running quite vigorously and on opening the door your could make out a 'hot burning' smell, particularly from the rear of the Monster. Also noted RPM running at 1000rpm at idle but engine temp was normal at 90 degrees (no oil temp reading on mine). At nearly 3000 miles this is probably the first Regeneration I have noticed occurring.

Not sure if I should have left her running until she had finished but after a couple of minutes standing around I got bored, so I shut down. Fans kept going still rather vigorously for possibly another 3-5 minutes. Also noted the burning smell disappeared shortly after turning the engine off.

Of interest in the photo are two warning symbols (under the taco needle) not used on the Yeti; one l think is for a lane automatic distance control system and the other looks like a centre diff lock.

Not sure if this was my imagination but after yesterdays 'Regeneration' my Monster felt like she'd overdosed on the 'Red Bull' today; she just wanted to fly

anybody else noticed this?

I have not noticed a regeneration cycle as such, buit after a week of toodling around town, followed by a bit of highway driving, she does get awfully perky all of a sudden.

I have not noticed any smalls that were unusual, but parking in the garage one time, she did small hot - not unusual for a relatively new vehicle to do some off-gassing of various assembly compounds when hot.
