n type wireless router

Featured Replies

I need to be able to transmit wireless broadband about 60 metres and through two walls....I have looked up a few and the Belkin Wireless 300N Cable Router seems able to do 1200 feet (about 400 metres) I just wondered if anyone had or is transmiting over this ditance and what you use.

TIA

Rob

what are the walls made of and how thick are they?

The office I work in has some walls that are solid and 2 foot thick so wireless signals struggle to get 10 metres whereas at home I can get a signal outside on the drive at the opposite end of the house which is a similar distance and there are three walls in the way including the external wall of the house.

Most of the distances quoted by manufacturers are for line of site without any obstructions, you will also need to consider the wireless card in the receiving computer and whether it can match the router for power.

What about something like using those doobrys that plug into the electrical sockets or just running some cat 5 cable?

Walls are standard outside cavity house walls ....but it is two separate houses about 60 metres apart so it has to be wireless....(my son has moved out and wants to use our internet :smirk:

google pringles and directional aerials

oh and you didn't do a very good job of getting rid of him. Just tell him he can only use the internet when he comes round to do his washing... :giggle:

Go on, build a cantenna (well two) and let us know how you get on. Looks very neat.

Yes, i'd again recommend building a directional antenna on either side and get them pointing at each other..

Doing this focuses the signal and should offer good TX and RX rates taking into account management overheads..

I'd also do a quick scan and see what frequencies are currently being used around you so you can pick a channel with minimal crosstalk and interference.

I personally don't buy into all these special routers that offer further range...

Does anyone know if Belkin do a type N router with a printer server on it? If not I'm after one with a USB (or parallel) connector for the printer, and still type N wireless speeds and range. We use ntl/virgin cable, so one with out a built in modem.

We have just got a G+ (125Mb/s) Belkin one and the range is quite poor.

Do the doobrys that plug into the electrical sockets depend on all equipment being on same phase .AFAIK, the phaseson the electrical suply are alternatedcbetween properties -hence the phenomon agood fewyears ago of baby monitors being heard in other houses .
