Superb II weights

Featured Replies

Hi as a newbie here looking to buy either a Superb CR 170 or a Yeti as a towcar, I wonder if any members could assist me with letting me know what the MIRO (mass in running order) quoted on their V5 says as I am trying to work out an accurate weight of the Superb II

Many thanks.

CR 170 Elegance

Mass in service = 1573kgs

Max permissible mass = 2118kgs

Maximum towable mass (trailer) = 1800kgs (braked)

Should cover most caravans easily enough

I wouldnt get DSG if towing though its habit of going into top gear at 40mph would drive me mad if i was pulling something

Thanks for the info, your comment about the DSG is very useful as I was considering either a 170 cr SE DSG or a manual Elegance.

You won't always have the caravan hitched up to the car. Also I don't think the box will change up to an inappropriate gear while its under load (still pulling) and you still have the option of manual driving if you need it. I wouldn't rule out the DSG.

Good point, also the one I am looking at has flappy paddles for manual use.

Re the comments about DSG, I would urge you to have DSG if towing - very relaxing, no slipping clutch issues in jams and certainly it's clever enough to hold lower gears when necessary - the only time I think about over-riding with manual change is on a motorway long upgrade at around 60mph, where it sometimes hunts between 5th and 6th - I solve by just dropping the cruise control to 57mph then it holds 6th Ok. Will depend on your caravan of course - mines a twin axle Bailey Limousin shipping length 7.83m; MTPLM of 1589kg, which is the weight it is generally operated at. Tows with no problem at all though mpg is down to around 27 while towing in my case.

The Skoda factory item removable towbar is a superb device, but expensive and of course you need to specify factory fitted tow bar prep and electrics to get the best out of the system - see my earlier threads on this issue.
