Call me a skinflint!! But

Featured Replies

Does any body know of the cheapest tyres in or around Wiltshire or even mobile fitters, I am going to need THREE very soon! at the moment they are 205 55 16 Bridgestone turanza. If I can get tyres cheaper by slightly altering the size I'll even consider that, any advise welcome.

What tyre do I want? same as everybody else wants ....one that does everything! but would settle for one that lasts a while.

skinflint :P

I've finally learned that budget tyres are a false economy. Cheap compounds tend to either grip like hell in the dry, but wear out rapidly and don't grip in the wet, or last forever, but don't grip in the dry or the wet.

Michelins are expensive, but last a long time. They're not the greatest in the wet, but they're not bad, either. I found Goodyear NCT3s to be a reasonable compromise: they're excellent in the wet, reasonable in the dry, and last a fair amount of time.

It's well worth phoning round a few places, and trading prices off against each other. From my experience, independents tend to be a little cheaper. But watch out for the common practice of trying to add VAT to the final price, even when they said it was included when you phoned up! I always double-check the price when I arrive.

The last time someone tried the VAT trick on me, I told them to stick my old tyres back on, and I'd go somewhere else. Not surprisingly, they capitulated and charged me a fair price instead.

Is it really worth buying the cheapest tyres available - they're the only things keeping you on track on the road... (And after watching a repeat of 5th gear the other morning where they had a piece about shoddy tyres and blow-outs, I'm glad I spent

If you change the size of your tyres you may be invalidating your insurance cover unless you tell your insurer, in which case you would then be classed as driving a modified vehicle and insurance will increase etc. etc. is changing the tyre size going to save you money?

Looks like I've got some phoning round to, don't get me wrong I'm after decent tyres... but at a good price... I've done the driving round on plastic tyres once before (I think they were Vredistein ..interesting but not reccommended) so will be looking for Goodyear, Michelin, Bridgestone etc (What are Falkens like?) I'd just like them to last longer than 10,000 miles.

try Mike Wood tyres in Devises

I use Vredestein Ultrac and find them very good, much better than Pirelli's I've previously used. They've also won quite a few tyre tests. However I think they have improved alot recently as I've heard others complain about older designs from them. I hear quite a few complaints about Michelin Pilot Sport not giving enough grip in the wet or dry but they do last a long time.
