Columbus unit & 32 Gb SD cards

Featured Replies

My Superb is from Sept 09 and will only accept 2Gb SD cards.

Is there an update to the new 32GB cards mentioned in Skoda' s latest brochure?

You need to install firmware 266x or firmware 268x, the both fully support SDHC cards and remove the 2GB SD card limitation, there is a long running thread on here with instructions on how to carry out the upgrade. As with all firmware upgrades they are at your own risk and you risk turning the columbus into an expensive door stop.

I have been told 2680 firmware is reliable and "bricking" is a thing of the past, i have updated 2 columbus units both with no probs (one was a 2008 unit) and can confirm they work with 4GB and 16Gb SD card (do not have a 32GB available. you can now transfer your MP3 files easly on to the hard drive.

Id love the thoughts of 32gb card. I like to have a folder structure for music and its a pain on the HD copying with a 2 gb card and I dont want to keep cutting DVD DLs

I see on other sites where people that upgraded firmware themselves lost some functionality.

Primarily with the buttons on the steering wheel.

Did you update them your self by CD or something.

Also would a skoda garage with the VAG equipment be able to update for me or is their latest offical version ancient anyway.

Hi dfsuperb,

The whole DIY upgrade process has always been very reliable for Superb II owners. This is mainly because our cars came with the Columbus as factory fit. Most of the 'bricking' episodes I've read about seem to happen to retrofit Columbus units where the security code flash chip has been tampered with (I'm guessing in an attempt to diguise that the units were stolen).

Again, the steering wheel control functionality gets lost only on older cars, where the unit is usually a retrofit. You can fix this by swapping over two folders in the firmware upgrade image. From what I can tell, most recent Skoda cars handle the steering wheel controls differently from how VW does it (and how Skoda used to). When you swap the folders around, you put the VW code in place of the 'new' Skoda code, and it all works again. For Superb II owners, none of this is required. You can take the standard firmware CD, and just use it.

I've recently updated my Columbus to the 2664 firmware, and am very happy with it. Everything works just fine, and in most ways, better than before. It was simply a case of inserting the upgrade CD, confirming that I wanted to go ahead, and then waiting about an hour for the flash to complete. There is a newer 2684 CD doing the rounds, but it performs a complete factory reset on the sound system. This means that you would need to reload all of the maps and music, plus recode the car using VAG-COM. This is especially crucial if you have the sound system, as doing the 2684 upgrade will prevent it from working until you recode.

With regards to getting the dealer to do the update, then the latest firmware they have for pre-wk45 cars is 1164. Any cars produced after wk45 (2nd Nov 2009), already have the 2664 or newer firmware. VW have now released a 1200 firmware which does enable SDHC support for older RNS-510 units, so it's entirely possible that Skoda will release a 1204 that does the same for the Columbus. At the moment, there isn't any sign of this.

(with regards to firmware versions, firmware ending in x0 e.g. 2660 is the VW version, and firmware ending in x4 e.g. 2664, 2684 is for Skoda, and I'm pretty sure that 2662 etc. is for SEAT).

Hope this helps,

Bagpuss.

Thanks for that Bagpuss.

I see several versions of 2664 on the web.

What disk did you use. "standard firmware CD"

Do you get a status update on the screen and do you need car running or just key in ignition..

Also if the cd is not OK (burnt at right speed or other issue) will it check the disk to see its OK to continue or will it continue and find an issue as it meets them.

If it fails can it be retried by the CD or the old version put on by the dealers.

My superb was bought in Feb 09 and does this make any difference.

One other thing.

Did you find any problems or improvements with the phone setup after upgrade or is it impacted at all.

I have Blackberry storm and N97.

Does it change the iphone compatibility.

D

The upgrade does nothing to the phone, you need to change to a GSM2 unit, that will give you good compatibility with most phones and iphones, I can only say about the 2680/2684 firmware update and that i was impressed but it does set everyting to standard (including steering wheel controls), Skoda garages genrally can not help! you need to find someone with VAG-COM and they can sort it out in 10-15 mins.

On the topic of SD Cards, I have just ordered my superb 2 (yey!!!) and its coming with the bolero, Im trawling the web to find a good price 32gb SD Card, However there are lots of diffrent speeds etc (depends how much you want to spend!)

If going for a 32gb card should i spend the extra cash and go for a 10x or something like tat or will it make a diffrence to music playback at all?

Get the fastest SD card you can buy, getting a slow one and putting it into the bolero means very slow performance especially when initially reading the card.

 Ok Thanks

Can anyone suggest a good card to buy / where to buy / and how much to spend approx?

Bryan

See this thread and also this thread as getting a 32GB card will only give you heartache if you don't solely use playlists.

Any large card without playlists will probably give you time to have a brew and maybe go on holiday before it's usable. Changing tracks starts the waiting game all over again!

Go onto ebay and order one from China or Hong Kong, a lot cheaper than getting them locally

other than that you could try My Memory (http://www.mymemory.co.uk/)

looking for some help here, I have just gotten one of these Kingston SDHC 16GB cards

SD6G2/16GB

I have put about 10GB of mp3s on it and the Columbus unit does not seem to recognize it, i only have the car a few days, built about 3 weeks ago, so assuming latest firmware.

is this card compatible?

7dayshop have a 32gb class 10 for £27 delivered.

I've got a 2011 Octavia with a bolero on loan prior to delivery of my Superb.

I have a 8gb class 10 card full of music and it reads the tracks instantly. I can change albums, tracks, artists instantly - quicker than my pc and hdd and slightly quicker than my ipod!! It starts up instantly as soon as inserted.

I'm so impressed I've bought a 32gb to see if it is as quick and effective - i'll update when I know!!.

Anyone with full 2 gig SD cards want to lend me them so I can fill the remaining 31.6 gig on my unit, if so send me a PM and I will provide a postal address once uploaded they will be returned

I did use lime wire for downloads and have most of the hits from 1957 to 1985 so need from there on, but they have now gone and cannot find anymore free sites

Are you using iTunes? I found that mp3/4 music files ripped from iTunes do not work - a right pain in the a$$, as it meant I then had to reload all my CDs onto Windows Media Player (waste of time and space) which the Skoda unit then recognised.

Card came today from 7dayshop, put 26gb of music on it. Works as quick as the 8gb. Track/Album/Artist selection is instant, I'm very impressed. Highly recommend it, no more cds!

Hi,

Hmmm this is a definate pain.... so is there any way of getting files which have all been loaded copied purchased in iTunes to get them onto an SD cad so its readable? Any conversion programms or something. We've got everything on there :'(

Never got round to delving deeper but ours obviously also doesn't work :envy:

Be great if you've got any ideas out there....

Thanks

Stef

" Cutting DVD Dls " ?? can you play movies from your SD card on Columbus ??

It would be interesting to see if a different class 10 card is as quick with the same directory structure and size on it. I have a genuine SD class 10 card and it certainly isn't that fast.

I find these threads interesting as I personally find that the tracks read instantly from my head unit. Ive got about 10gb of 320kbps mp3 tracks on a Sandisk 32gb class 10 card and it really is as quick as the hard drive in terms of accessing (as it should be imo).

  • 4 weeks later...

Are there any particular rules or conventions that apply to the folder structure and/or filenames for using an SD card?

I am expecting a 32Gb SDHC Class 10 from 7dayshop tomorrow!

Thanks

Puss
