Is this a silly question? Are all diesels created equal, or are some more equal than others?

I ask because BP do an'ultimate Diesel', with the promise of more power and more fuel economy. And it's 5p a litre more. Is this just a cynical way for BP to make 5p a litre more out of us, or is there any measurable performance gain to be had?

I must admit, I've filled up a couple of times, out of the fear that I might be 'missing' something.

Shell do Diesel Extra, which I use because it's got some favourable reports on here and also is the cheapest garage locally anyway - 84.9p. Saw 87.9p today at a Texaco.

In my 04 plate 14,000 mile vRS average speed on a 107 motorway mile run was 69mph, 51mpg all this according to the on-board machine running on Shell.

Filled up with Esso Energy this week as away from home. Don't notice any difference at the moment...

So anyway, stuff the extra 5p for BPs stuff (I've never tried it, no BP garage in striking distance anyway)!

And therein lies the problem. It's very hard to make an objective comparison - the car 'feels' different depending on prevailing weather conditions (cold, damp mornings it goes REALLY well) let alone different fuels. A few years beack I used to drive a 1.7TD Astra van, and used to *think* I could feel a difference between some brands, I used to favour esso and texaco, but maybe that was because they had red in their logo???

I'll look out for that shell stuff anyway.

i pay 82.9 for sainsburys :)

there is a garage around here thats 92P a litre and its not on a motorway !!!

Tesco diesel for me. Never had any probs, car pulls nicely and I see between 55-60mpg on my commute to work, so I can't complain :D Also builds up my clubcard balance, although not quite as rapidly as my TDI Discovery used to

I tried BP Ultimate for one tankfull - never again! No noticeable improvement in performance, definitely no improvement in economy, but a GBP45 bill for the fuel

It's supposed to have a higher octane rating, I think, just like Super Unleaded...

That extra 5p covers the marketing costs :)

i pay 82.9 for sainsburys :)

Sainsbury's diesel for ours at 83.0p - 5p per litre so 77.9p for spending

ooh it may have gone up here now not put any in for a week

50 litres at 5p per litre =

50 litres at 5p per litre =

^^^^^^ better idea :)

Gah! What am I thinking. Sod BP and their record profits, Tesco's finest it is.

Can't believe I got suckered into that one.

Over a couple of weeks I tested tankfulls of both Shell and Tesco. Using the trip computer I found that average economy with Shell was 51.4mpg and Tesco was 47.8mpg. The car never idled or picked up as well as it does on Shell. Since they stopped doing 5p a litre off I have switched back to Shell and economy has risen....

I believe this is due to Tescos bio-diesel blend that has been mentioned on here before.

Colin, I think Tesco do two "strains", their mineral City Diesel (black pump) and their mineral/5% bio-diesel blend (blue pump). I use whichever one is the cheapest at the moment :)

I must be a grandad when it comes to driving my Fabia, my first tank on my new car has lasted 535 miles and I averaged 62.5 mpg....

I never had to think about which flaming pump or grade of flaming fuel i put in my motor before.

Being very easily confused all this chat is doing my head in.

Oh and by the way i live in Aberdeen, Oil capital of Europe, over 90p per ltr in some garages up here.

Cheaper in Iraq me rekons.

What's the price for 1 liter of diesel in England? Are you paying pr. liter or pr. gallon?

Hi

I find this website semi useful if I know in advance where I am going to fill up. http://www.aapetrolbusters.com/ You just register and it sends you each week the top 5 cheapest stations in your postcode. Or you can do searches as well.

Appreciate your opinions on the diesel variants. I used to fill my last 2 cars with Optimax as they stated in the fuel cap 98 ron unleaded petrol. But on the ocassions where I filled up with normal unleaded boy did I notice the difference. Glad I dont have the same dilema with my new Skoda. Plus half the fuel bill too which is great.

I've not put any in for ten minutes , so it may have gone up again.

About 2 months ago I was paying 79.9 pence per litre.

Now the cheapest I can find it 84.9 but 87.9 is most common.
