Replacement panel filter - K&N or Pipercross?

Featured Replies

Hey peeps!

Just looking at replacing the standard filter in my car and wanted to know if there was a better choice to go for here - K&N or Pipercross.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Andy

Just replace the OEM paper filter every 10k IMHO

Pipercross shouldn't be oiled, so would be better.

What's this then? Pipercross Accessories :p

I'd still buy a K&N one though.

Any reasons to go K&N over Pipercross?

Mine doesn't appear to be oiled?

Why K&N?

Well, I've always bought them and are well known in Motorsport. They have a lifetime guaranty (1 million miles) and I'm sure I've read that they retain the muck better and the muck does not restrict the flow as much than foam ones. K&N v Paper The alternative is a Green one which is similar to K&N.

The only problem is after you clean them, you can over-oil them and kill your MAF.

hi, ive just fitted a pipercross panel filter, itis noticeably different, you can hear more turbo whizzz, and on a 50mile run this morning 2mpg more! every little helps!!

best of all i won it on ebay brand new £5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My new Pipercross is described on the part label on the box as a "dry" filter. It doesn't need oiled. I believe the older ones did.

I'm with ap0gee on this - they will make no performance difference over the OE filter changed EVERY service (not at VAG's recommended intervals)

All a K&N, Pipercross etc filter will do is make more induction noise, so some people might think it is performing better :giggle:

Really?

I'm sure I have read independent tests that show that performance filters have much better air flow through them compared to paper ones. Books like David Vizard's A-Series tuning and many others.

Yes that is true, but that book was produced 25 years ago so was using old technology filters.

On a petrol engine then a K&N etc is going to help, but on modern diesel engines the std filter can filter more air than even a moderately tuned engine needs.

I have seen some YouTube videos demonstrating how much more flow they (K&N) give compared to paper ones.

However, I agree with you on diesels. A diesel runs on excess air so changing the air filter and/or intake pipe (PD160 for Furbys) will not make much difference on performance. It may just reduce the black smoke from the exhaust. I changed my panel filter while on a rolling road and added a whopping 1 BHP! (143.3 vs 142.1 BHP). To gain best performance, a re-map is required to use these improved flow rates.

i would agree with you on this, mine is more noisy with the pipercross filter which is what i wanting! but in a none chav way :), their is no noticeable difference on performance at all. but for what i payed for it im happy, i would feel bit ripped off if i had payed £35+ for one tho.

Its my understanding that Pipercross actually make BOTH a dry and an oiled one - Someone please correct me

and Awesome GTI did recommend the DRY one for VAG engines

And for my twopenneth worth - there was no more noise than the std paper one

- but I would say they do need to be cleaned very regularly to maintain good perfomance

Tis true, they supply all ours dry to reduce the likely hood of maf failure.

Who am I to argue then? :D
