Could a coil pack be on way out?

Featured Replies

Over the last couple of months the vRS will occassionally rev up to 2k rpm for no reason on start up, yesterday morning when started it it ran very lumpy/weird (not done it before so not sure how to describe)then cleared (after the revs went up) Jas took it to work today and said it had been stopped a coupled of times (I'm assuming he means cut out/stalled) has had new plugs recently

Separately I got a Air mass meter as it seems hesitant at low revs (especially when cold) local VW tech suggested this - I doubt it is related to above prob though.

(Are the coil same part for all engines? GSF list 1 part for the 1.8T, but the air mass was specific to AUQ)

Thanks in advance for comments (sorry if this has been asked a 100 times, I did do a search and read some posts, but they were all a bit different!)

could be the coolant temp sensor. I would check to see if you have a green one or the original grey one. If it is the CTS it will show up an error.

I'm afraid I don't know where on the vrs the sensor is as I have a diesel.

It could be any number of things.

Do you not have access to VCDS or know someone with it that can scan the car and look for fault codes?

Thanks, i have a feeling this was already replaced last year (had a problem with it dying for no reason, was timing speed sensor or soemthing, but had both replaced)

See if my friendly VW tech will plug it in see what codes come up (engine light is not on currently) (thanks Carl)

Thats kind of you, bit far from me!

I know its a 'could be this' apparently was a bit misfirey today (not done that while Ive driven it and it is my daily runner) could be secondary air pump, then I need to sort out my wobble lol (poss cv)

There is a list on here of people who have vag-com and are willing to help, if your local VW tech won't help you out.

Thanks mbames.

Started and ran fine this morning, going to jack it up and take the air pump off to see if gap, get it plugged into code reader soon to

To my knowledge a coil pack either works or doesnt.

Running lumpy at first and than clearing up can be a problem with moisture.

Higher revs after start up, can mean problems with the cold start system or false air comming into the induction system.

If the plugs were replaced recently, I would check all the leads and connectors first and eventually and spray some anti moist stuff on it (dont know how you call it).

Thanks Magic, kinda what I thought TBH being intermitant prob, gave it a good inspection and nothing obvious, and has been ok since, could be the cold/damp

I don't think it's a coil pack; they don't have an engine speed control function.

I'd suspect temperature sensor, or idle stabilisation, but it really wants VCDS. Have a look on the VAGCom forum for someone near you.
