black gunge

Featured Replies

After being made redundant yesterday :'( Idecided to keep busy and tidy up the engine bay a little after the bad weather weve had. I removed the engine cover and washed down the engine and then removed the pipes from the catch can.One of the pipes was full of what looked like black silicon so I removed the top of the catch can and OH MY GOD !!!! ther was about3 inches deep of the black goo inside , with around an inch of water on the top.Ive had this on my car for about a year now and have removed the drain plug on the side at least once a fortnight, but have only seen a small amount of water drain from the hole.IM glad I fitted the catch can, as all that crap would have ended up in my engine. If you have one of these on your car , make sure you remove the top every so often as like on mine, you could end up with a potentially engine knackering situation if the crap and water had been drawn into the engine.Looks like I caught it just in time.

Bad new on the job front

One might wonder if something else is wrong, if the catch can is collecting that much water....?

thanks mate, yes I thought that but with the drain plug being full of crap, the water couldnt go anywhere but on top of the oily gunk, and the expansion bottle is always up to the full mark, and ive not put a drop of water in it since the cambelt was done 18 months ago.Its probably just condensation,as the catch can is bolted to the side of the battery box so the temp changes will probably cause this .
