312mm brake upgrade

Featured Replies

i know these things have been discussed before, i have done a search but not keen on the new search function and didnt find the answer to my question.

found a guy selling discs, pads and carriers that use the original calipers, he had them on a leon tdi. would this go on the fabia without changing the calipers? i'm assuming all 288's in the vag range use the same parts.

No.

From what i understand you need to change the calipers on the fabias, whereas you can get away with the standard caliper on the mk4, leon etc.

thanks kev, wasn't the answer i was hoping for though :(

There's a guy on seatcupra.net selling the AP calipers from the Ibiza Cupra.

You could buy the carriers, discs etc and then buy these calipers to suit..

sounds like a plan, will see how the bidding on the other bits goes first. if i get outbid i'll leave at that but if i win then i'll be hunting calipers down emoticon-0100-smile.gif

Yeah, basically a lot of MkIV Golf-class VAG cars ran the same CALIPERS as the 312mm set-up, but with 288mm discs - probably not worth the bother changing on the vRS. The Ibiza brakes sound like a much better option if you're looking for meaningful improvements in braking. Otherwise, just put some fast road pads on with your standard calipers and discs. Provided you're not using the car on a track, you'll get much better braking performance for not very much money, with the only meaningful down-side being an increased risk of brake fade (hence the point about using them on a track...)

The 312mm brakes were fitted to all VAG group cars with 150bhp +

Octavia vRS, Leon FR 150 TDI and 150/180 20vt, Golf 150 TDI and 150/180 20vt, also the Audi TT

The Fabia, Ibiza and Polo with 150bhp petrol and 130bhp diesel had 288mm brakes but used the Lucas calipers/carriers.

You need the whole lot, carriers and calipers, discs and pads... VW put better calipers on the 130bhp TDI Golf so they only need the 312mm carriers and discs.

Hope that helps :)

Yeah, to be fair, the Mintex Extreme pads I had on with OEM-diameter discs probably had similar braking power to the 312s I have now, but were pretty prone to fade under repeated, heavy use. They ate the discs something chronic too, but if you don't do high mileage, and don't drive the car hard that often, then they'll be a very good alternative like I suggested earlier... :)

Those are just the standard Mintex pads though are they not? Ive tried to find reviews of the standard ones, but all I keep getting are the Redbox ones or Extremes.

My mate has the Redstuff Ceramics on his TT and they seem to work very well, and with little dust - hence I was going to try them.

Can't decide tbh!

got my 312s with near new discs and pads for £170. bargins to be had!

My fabia VRS is currently is running 312mm discs and red stuff pads.

I had a scary experience with 'brake fade' earlier today which made me want to upgrade a bit more.

Anyone know of decent braided lines, pads or fluid that is worth the money?

The front pads were changed in May.

IME, having aggressive pads exacerbates fade. I just use OEM pads, and have never suffered fade nor wanted extra braking power from my 312s. DOT5.1 fluid may help prevent boiling, and grooved discs will help with pad glazing, but having had both, I'm not sure they're all that...

I have grooved, only worth it if you like sounding like a tube train stopping each time. lol

it wasn't a power thing it was a platform thing. the 150bhp Octavia 1.8T came with 288's but being based on the A4 platform (not model) could be upgraded with carriers+disks

What is the brake dust like with these pads dude?

ive never done loads of miles at a time really but just normal amount i'd say...

Ok - i've got a small questrion regarding 312's??!! Is there an ABS sensor on the caliper - does the ABS work the same when you have changed the caliper & the carrier over? I've bought a new set of pads for the setup - discs it came with are almost new. But the new pads have the depth sensors in them with the electronic plugs on them - I guess you just cut these off if the car doesnt have the depth sensors??

ABS sensor is in the hub i believe...

ABS will remain functional when changing caliper & carrier.

Just cut off the wear sensors from your new pads.

There are apparently two different types of red stuff pad. Redstuff and redstuff ceramic (Which are far superior) Ive also heard that they produce very little dust

the ABS sensor is definitely in the hub, i thought i broke mine when changing the hub as the light was on for a while meaning ASR and ABS were not working but strangely it fixed itself.

light is off and both features work perfectly. :)

Braided lines - No point, the standard hoses are re-enforced

Pads - Mintex or DS2500's if you spend the cash. TBH most things are going to be better than what you have fitted now.

Fluid - Halfords 5.1 which is £10 a litre (This will be your best value upgrade and IMHO, fluid should be swapped out every year if you do a lot of brake heavy driving)
