Various Problems with my tdi estate

Featured Replies

Well as title really. new car, 2000 octavia estate tdi.

First problem the speedo is wrong? easy fix? hard fix? by wrong I mean 10 mph lower then actual speed. checked with a gps and next to another car.

Second problem. mpg. How many miles should i be getting from a tank? from full I have got 380 and the red light has just come on! this doesnt seem like many to me?? what can I change check to increase consumption.

And thirdly came down this morning to drive the car. Pressed the unlock button on the key sounded like it worked but drivers door would not open! tried the key in the lock it turned completely round a few times then fell out. I also cant open the door from the inside! brilliant! what would have caused this? it was find the night before?? once again is it fixable? is it possible to take the door panel of without the door being open???

Any help how big or small would be hugely appreciated!

regards.

Simon

I expect to see 55+ mpg generally on my drive to/from work. 60 miles of A roads, a bit twisty. I tend to refill when down to 1/4 of a tank and that is something like 480 miles covered. Drain your fuel filter, stick in a few air filter too - might help. Check temperature sensor isn't duff with vag-com

Speedo around the 70 mark I think mine is over reading by about 6-7 mph, at 30 it is spot on with my GPS.

Lock failure..... think it has been covered on here before, but not a massively common issue.

I used to get at least 55mpg out of my 110 Octavia, and i never got it below 50mpg (fully loaded and 'going some'). What size tyres are on the car? has someone fitted the wrong profile?

When was it last serviced and with what oil? The temp sender would make a big difference to your mpg if it is faulty, likewise so would a faulty MAF, blocked filters etc.

Not sure about the door lock, but the door needs to be open to remove the door cards.

Personally i would give it a service, then scan the car for faults with VCDS to see what is amiss.

Everything that mbanes said although I get a couple of MPG more.

Remember that the speedo reading changes a small amount with tyre wear (as the rolling circumference changes) giving the biggest error when the tyres are down to the wear markers.

If the key rotates one of two things has happened. Either the lug that protudes from the end of the barrel has broken off or the door lock mechanism has broken.

You CAN get the door card off without opening the door or destroying the card. Remove all the screws you can get at (there will instructions on here somewhere). The remaining screws/clips around the lower/side edges are designed to break away if you insert a lever where the screw is. Use the door on the other side as a reference to where they are.

Bad news is if the door is deadlocked or broken, then you may have to destroy the lock to open the door. As you will already know you can't remove the lock or change the barrel without opening the door

his speedo is reading UNDER tho not the usual overreading, what size wheels and tyres are on it first and if the speed is reading less then the miles covered on the speedo will be reading less too so maybe you are actually getting good mileage, also the tank is not that big really

Pretty much as others.

Since you explicitly say that it's an SLX Si, IIRC it should have 196/65R15s as standard.

Tank is 11 gallons, with a warning buzzer and light that activates at just over 1 gallon (I think 5l?) left.

Cheers for all the help guys.

Will attempt to get the door card of to have a look and see what has happened.

Tyre size is 195/65/15s which was the first thing I checked and as has been said are standard I believe.

Will get her serviced and see what happens.

Cheers for all the help once again.

Any more help and suggestions will be great!

Simon

Welcome :)

Hope you get it sorted out soon :)

My light/buzzer comes on at 60 miles (trip computer), which I believe is the 1 gallon mark (give or take a fraction)

I think it's working on estimated range then, because I don't get as good mpg as you do normally; you'll have some idea about why I think.

Check brakes aren't binding on and that handbrake releases. The pads are prone to seizing in the caliper bodies and effectively holding on the brakes slightly. Also the handbrake actuator arms on the rear calipers can seize on. Does the car roll easily when pushed?

Your trip computer should show instantaneous and average MPG figures expect around 60mpg at a steady 65mph on a flat road.

This is now my car - I hadnt realised that the speedo was under reading that badly but had a suspicion. Does anyone have any experience of correct an under reading speedo? Door lock is either broken again or never got fixed! Will VCDS it tonight if its not raining

Hi

New to this site just got 2003 Octavia Ambiente TDI.

Thanks

Diagnostic software . Written by ross tech . There is a free version which can diagnose or a paid version which allows you to clear fault codes and do more in terms of monitoring engine states and re coding certain controllers . You can buy a lead off eBay or from Gendan and others for less than £20.

Thanks for the explanation chrisevans
