RANT WARNING!

What's with this "my bad" rubbish?

Don't tell me it's yet another bloody Americanism?

This is Britain, not America. Arrgh! :@

Chill dude !! I suppose the "World Wide Web" is solely for the use of the British. I'm Irish.

Perfect.

Perfect.

I've almost given up worrying about my English as I know it's old fashioned... My 12 year old says something is "sick" if it's really good... I can't keep up.. And I don't do "txtspk" either :S

from people that have made comments about the DSG gearbox, most would not buy one if outside a warrenty. Put plently of people do and will..........at the end of the day its probably no less likely to fail than any other auto gearbox out there but people still buy them.

Would I? if it was well looked after, serviced correctly and I was in the market for one then yes I think I would. Like all cars we all hear about the ones that fail and not often the ones that dont......I'm sure there is many DSG boxes out there with lots of mileage with no problems.

I did, almost. The car was 2.5 years old when I bought it, but was overdue a service, which the supplying (non-franchise) dealer carried out, so I'd have been pushing my luck with Seat UK. The car only had 20k miles on it, and no DSG servicing is required until 40k (nearly there now...)

I really don't think DSG is any more likely to blow up than any other complicated auto, as you say, and they appear at breakers at prices that would merely shock you, rather than kill you, so I think the risk is mitigated.

Hi

I've had my new Octavia L&K estate 1.8TSI DSG for about 3 days now and would like to make a few comments re DSG. I had never driven a DSG until I drove away from the dealers on Tuesday. I have had conventional automatics in the distant past (and liked them). I never test drive a car but do a vast amount of research instead. This forum being a particularly good source of info. No question about an Octavia as I have had my trusty Mk1 19TDI for nearly 12 years (one of the first) and I wasn't going to look at any other make of car. So my research told me to go for the 1.8TSI petrol (after 25 years of diesel) and to get the7 speed DSG box due to its economy features and the fact that I rather like automatic gears.

So far I have found none of many of the problems reported onthis forum and I have spent time on my test runs looking for them :-

Reversing up an incline. Very easy indeed. Just let that wonderful creep do it. It drove me up a fairly steep narrow incline as fast as I wanted (too fast really) so no accelerato and all was wonderful. I have an eggshell touch when operating an accelerator pedal - always have had so I have zero problems with any sudden jerkiness at low speeds.

Jerkiness in slow moving town traffic. Absolutely not - far smoother than I could achieve with my manual set up.

Delays when hesitating at roundabouts etc. Maybe just a little but now I'm used to it the it won't be noticable - my driving has already adjusted for that very small amount of hesitation.

Driving in snow. No snow but I set off as if there was. I let the forward creep (set me off and before I touched the accelerator I got it into 2nd gear via the paddle. That was taking me as slowly as my 1.9TDI would go when successfully driving it at tickover up an incline in recent snow. So I suspect with very careful use of the creep it should do some snow work but I'll have to wait for the real thing to see.

I find the steering wheel paddles to be essential (for me). Without them I would be perfectly happy. However when gently driving along I can keep the revs down a little and the economy up by occasionally touching that right hand paddle. No one would know I had done that unless they observed the rev counter. No noise and no jerk - impossible to detect the changes. Yes a bit of a toy perhaps thaose paddles but I would not like to be without them given a choice. If they didn't exist then I would be happy with the gear box. Keeping the revs down with that 1.8TSI engine is not a problem - it drives just like a diesel at low revs. I have tried one kick down for a test and wow - the car nearly took off (smoothly though)

Economy shown on maxidot so far - allowing for country lanes a bit of town driving and a lot of messing is 34mpg.I am happy with that though assume things will improve with both increased mileage and more conventional driving. I filled up with super unleaded but am not convinced it is necessary with hand book and filler cap indicating 95 octane.

So basically I am absolutely sold on the DSG system and the car as a whole is a dream, The L&K version is an economical way of obtaining all the bells and whistles and the 1.8TSI is going to be fast enough for me.

Nice review..........really put my mind at rest as ive got a 1.8TSI DSG due in June. My drive is a steep incline and a few people have said ill struggle to get off it with DSG but from your review it would appear to be fine.

Cheers!

And I thought that my bad was for my b*****y awful driving....

BTW DSG rocks. I've had three and I'd have another like a shot.

You say that about the other halves driving.

SWMBO bad, cos' she pranged car.

Just been and test driven an '06 2.0 tdi 6 speed manual Ambiente today to replace my DSG Sport as my taxi, and what an excellent car. Like my Fabia vRS, it has a featherweight clutch, superb gearchange and, unlike the Sport, had excellent ride comfort.

Different class car to drive compared to the DSG so will more than likely tell him tomorrow the deal is done.

Will definitely never have another DSG as the Skoda clutch/gearbox is so good. I will happily leave my automatic car driving to my Jag. Thank god peoples opinions vary so widely. Bet the pro DSG comments still come in though.

I haven't read all of the posts here but thought I would share my personal experiences with my current car which is the 2.0TDI PD 140 Elegance with DSG.

I bought my particular car down at ALS Lock in Cambridge last january with 21,000 on the clock. Think the car belonged to an old gentleman who really looked after the car, so it was in perfect condition.

15 months on, and I've put 28,000 on the clock myself (I do a lot of driving and love driving!)

I would say that you really need to make your own mind up on test drives as to what you want from a car. I love the DSG as it really is the smoothest drive I've ever had in a car. However, you do feel a bit out of control when you want to control (if you get what I mean). The sport mode is pretty handy if you need some acceleration however, the car effortlessly gets to the red line smoothly through every gear.

That said, the only niggles I have with the box are: - when you put your foot down (although I would guess this depends upon how hard you push your foot) the car has to decide whether or not to stay in the same gear and accelerate, drop a gear (or even two, depending on what you were doing at the time) and that can lead to just a half second delay while the car decides.

Taking off similarly has a slight delay and I find that a bit annoying, but you learn to get used to it.

Anyway, it really is up to you, get as many test drives as you can.

Oh, bear in mind also that every 40,000 you are looking at £190 to service the gearbox oil and filter :)

DSG all the way, then sell it just before the Warranty expires and get another ........... Great gearbox

I got my DSG serviced for £119 at a local Skoda dealer.
