Dreaded Steering wheel vibrations On Octy VRs

Featured Replies

Hi guys, just thought i would grab a few ideas regarding the problem with me octy vrs. I have an annoying steering wheel vibration at about 70-80 mph or roughly 3000 rpm upwards. Had the front wheels balanced a number of times now and have recently renewed front shocks, springs, top mounts, ball joints, link bars, discs and pads !! I go back to the rpm issue with the vibration becuase it seems to to start whenever i give the motor some gas.... might be barking up the wrong tree but has anybody had a similar issue? Its throwing me from the usual wheels need balancing or even an un balanced driveshaft !!! Its doin me head in as i do mainly motorway driving !!!! Any ideas or thought appriciated

Cheers

Might sound silly but have you had the wheels balanced at the same place each time? if so i'd try another garage first you might be surprised also it's worth getting all four done.

yer had the wheels done in 2 places .... hoping somebody has had a similar problem and set me on a course away from wheel balancing !!! :wonder:

Damaged hub/drive shaft/disc?

Have you swapped wheels over from back to front? best to try the simple things first to rule them out mate. I know that's not what you want to hear lol .

I've only ever seen this once, but could there be something loose inside a tyre? The time I saw it I'd not have believed it if I'd not been there (and the garage owner wouldn't have believed the fitter either if he'd not had a witness), but there were a set of 8" linesman's pliers inside a wheel!

Does it also happen under heavy braking, if so tyres out of shape!

Thanks for the replys guys, But belive it or not ive been down the "easy route/options" so thats why im wandering towards bearing or bushes as they are the only 2 components that have not been replaced up the front !!!! It dont increase or decrease uder braking ... seems to be dead on 70-80 mph i get the shakes ........... Ill keep trying lol :'(

Have you had the discs replaced recently (before the issue started)?

brand new padgid discs and pads up front ... still the same

Did they clean the hubs properly when they did the disks as any amount of crud will put the off true.

Also worth making sure the garage that balance the tyres do finger-plate balancing.

Place I use knows I go to Germany from time to time always does this and it makes a noticeable difference.

i had this problem and it turned out my nearside tyre was deformed slightly, replaced it and all is fine :)

Sounds to me like the toe is out, have you had an alignment check?

Protyre are pretty decent and do a 4 wheel alignment for about £25, I had similar symptoms that you describe.

Well finally got to the bottom of the wheel woblble issue i was having .... firstly deffo use a calibrated wheel balancer !!!!!! My balancer at work is callibrated but low and behold it is just pants at the job ... ended up at an ATS for me sins. Secondly i replaced the wishbones as it was easier than bush replacement and found the bushes to be kapputtt. Now have back my stiff Vrs :):):) Complete front end suspension rebuild in all .... needed it but the basic wobble problem i had was so frustrating !!!!

I've the same symptoms. ARBs and radiator mounts changed which have eliminated a lot of the knocking noises but still wanders like a bad shopping trolley above 60mph.

From the looks of this I'll be wanting to change the wishbones next. Start saving and hope SWMBO doesn't put any more petrol in my car! :giggle:

Sadly my 2002 vRS is suffering from wobble, tyres have been balanced (brake discs are low) wishbones have been replaced as bushes were worn, inner CV boot did have split in so join was dry, but VW tech thinks could be flywheel :(

What has the flywheel to do with wheel wobble?

What has the flywheel to do with wheel wobble?

I suppose a DMF could induce a wobbly feeling through the car in theory.

ERRR ....maybe lol

Thats what I thought lol replaced driveshaft in the end, sorted my wobble

I have this problem at present. Wobble more noticeable under acceleration but at all speeds. Have already replaced the offside driveshaft about 5000 miles ago due to play in both the inner and outer cv's. Now going to replace the shorter nearside one.

Is it the usual for these to fail, car has 65000 miles on it?

Had this on mine, it was caused by the 2 tyres on the front being almost the same model but being a different tread pattern. Have you tried swapping your front wheels to back etc?

Agree, mine was slightly out on my 2010 VRS and after correction, no vibration at all.

Definitely not the tyres this time. I'm pretty fussy about the tyres and replace the fronts at the same time and with my OCD like to keep all 4 the same brand and model.

Having inspected the nearside and offside driveshafts. There is slight free play in the inner cv on the nearside (short shaft) and the offside (long shaft) inner cv is totally shot. 2 new shafts required before I'm going anywhere :-(.
