Easy Sat Nav mount

Featured Replies

After some thought I came up with this as my sat nav quick and easy mount, I used the stick on hook and loop (velcro)

this stuff is amazingly sticky, I dont just mean the hook and loop part I mean the adhesive, you only need a small patch in the dash storage box and a patch on the sucker. You get a rock solid fix unlike the sucker which was for ever falling off,

I used the 2" wide strips which cost me £2 in total for the minimum 18" lengths from Dunhlem mill fabric store, hope its of some use to someone.

We have a Garmin Nuvi and place it "into" that storage compartment on the dash panel. We use a small bag containing peas or something bought from a Camera shop, this placed alongside the screen wedges it in place. Seems to work fine , camera users use same bags to prop a camera up to stop them moving when taking a shot.

Looks like a Merkin mount

Yeah more grip than the Brazilian though..

Nice job - now all you need is a power socket in the dash top box

Yes I agree although I dont use the nav everyday it would look neat If I did that, any recommendations re the power socket?

Nice idea. It will save getting the `tell-tale` round sucker mark on the windscreen which all good sat nav thieves know that the gubbins are in the boot when parked unattended. I`m going to raid `er indoors`s sewing box for some velcro and give mine a try. Thanks for the idea chum.

I'm going to do the same with my Garmin 1690 I reckon, nice idea. I too would like to get power into the storage compartment, I brought the subject up with my dealer and he wasn't exactly tripping over himself at the thought of doing it even though I expect to pay.

I had a look at fitting my satnav to either the cubby floor or the lid. Neither seemed to give the best option of movement for me so I made a little black plastic tray to fit in the cubby hole and mounted a suction disk on that to attach the sat nav too. Works well now I have reinforced the plastic by gluing another stip under it. Looks quite nice and means that there are no adhesive issues in the cubby hole - hot sun and mounting pads dont seem to mix, and no suction mounting marks on the screen.

I'll take some pics soon and post them up if any one is interested?

I'd just go with a no holes mount from Dashmount or Brodit myself, but whatever works for people

I have a Garmin, which came with a stick on disc. I put this under the mat in the cubby on top ofm the dash, so I can leave it there when I sell it. Works beautifully for postioning.

I had to do something other than use the sucker because it started to leak, you could actually hear it leaking as it sucked air in and fell off after a few minutes, make sure its a good quality hook and loop as there are some that are a bit flimsy, I tested it by putting the two parts together and pulling apart before buying. Amazing how strong it is , I did a 200 mile trip at the weekend with nav firmly in place

Not sure how you'd best get power to that storage box. I'd probably be tempted to drill a small hole in it and run the cable through and try to bury the rest of the gubbins in the dash. I'm guessing you'd have to try and find a switched live cable on the radio or air con to tap into.

I have my SatNav mounted on the RHS using the windscreen suction mount:

and I tapped into the fusebox right below for a switched live feed by simply plugging a 6.3mm male spade directly into an empty rail, used an inline fuse, burried the charger and adapter under the dash and fed the cable up and out at the bottom of the A pillar where it meeds the dash (which you can see in the above pic).

i have just bought a 12v socket to mount in the top cubby, for the sat nav. how easy is it to take out the top cubby box and is it possible to run the cables from there to the fuse box you shown above, as that looks like a neat way to get a live connection

thanks

Where did you get the socket from? I might do something similar, I may even make the socket a USB as it takes up less room.

yes please, I'm interested

Me too!!

How did you get the Skoda logo on it?

What we need is a USB din mount with the conversion gubbins behind, so all you see is a flush USB socket inside the top-box, that would be perfect! I've tried searching for one to no avail :(

I think, that's what I'm going to make. It won't be hard to dismantle a cheap DIN - USB converter and wire in directly to a flush mount USB socket into the top-box. The hardest part will likely be cutting the hole in the top box. Good excuse to buy that Dremmel!

I followed this guide:

http://www.knarf.ca/index.php/how-to-put-a-new-splash-screen-on-you-ga?blog=5

and just made the image myself from a logo found online. If you want a copy of the splash screen image, I can pull it off my satnav for you.

EDIT: what that guide doesn't mention is to copy the image into the /pics folder, or something like that - I don't remember without looking on my satnav.

EDIT2: just looked, it's in /Garmin/JPEG and is a jpeg file
