Classic cars anyone?

Featured Replies

I don't own a classic car, but am hiring a TR6 to drive SWMBO around in for her birthday. Saw what engine it had - 2.5l straight-6, and though 'I'm in for a good time', but no. Barely 100bhp - far less than my Furby! Guess I'll be sticking to the inside lane of the motorway...

TR6's are fantastic fun - they have an awesome exhaust note and you can practically hear the mechanical fuel injection working, you won't be disappointed

I have a friend who has a TR6' date=' and it should be 125bhp at least, some had 150bhp.

I was following in my Spitfire recently, and just couldn't keep up. I think the 0-60 quoted when new was sub 10 secs for a TR6.[/quote']

That's incorrect. The TR6 was available firstly as 150bhp and later on as a detuned 125bhp. Don't worry' date=' they're plenty quick enough Add a stainless exhaust and the fact that your **** is about two inches off the road and I don't think you'll find the car lacking.

A dog round town though, start some sort of workout now for your left leg[/quote']

I think you'll still enjoy the TR6, ap0gee Be careful on roundabouts though.

I stand corrected, and I'm liking the sound of my upcoming little road trip more and more! :)

PS: Showing my (lack of) age here - can someone explain this overdrive malarkey? Do I go 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 3rd in o/d, 4th in o/d or something???

Use o/d 4th as a 5th gear, o/d 3rd is probably more trouble than it's worth, probably hardly different from straight 4th.

Ta!

If I am accelerating on the open road, (50+mph) in my Spit', I'll go 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 4th+OD.

The OD is useful when driving through town or residential areas, keeping it in 3rd, and flicking the OD in and out depending on traffic flow.

Well , let me know if you want to sell it...

I will keep it in mind, I'm hanging on to it for this summer at least.

Much easier in Triumphs with the gearlever mounted switch

The OD switch in Spitfires is on the gearlever as you say, but in the TR it is on a steering column mounted stalk.

It is in my mate's TR6 anyway, on the right hand side, he flicks the OD in and out with his arm resting on top of the door, it makes it very easy to drive.

Where is it on MGs?

On the dash - you can just see it in this pic - far right hand corner:

Is that a toggle switch?

I like your steering wheel, looks like wood?

Yeah toggle with a slightly longer toggle on it than normal - about 2 inches long.

Yep Motolita wood rimmed wheel. Looks much better now since I had it off and sanded it down and re-varnished. Needs gear knob to match now, but more important stuff first - like head gaskets :(

I used to be into old fords and minis, classics I have owned:-

MK2 RS2000, absolutely beuatiful car to drive, nicely controlled without rattling your teeth, the engine when lightly modified was great round town, down the motorway or for fun through the lanes, everything just seemed nicely balanced and well built, Ive had lots of modifed escorts with 2l but the RS2000 was a far better drive than any of them.

MK1 1969 Capri 1600 GT XLR, very nice car, hardly a racer, but was quite solid when I had it. Still onits original engine with over 200,000 miles on the clock, dont know whether it ever had a rebuild, Ive never know the kent engine do more than 80,000 before the rings fail.

2 Mark 3 3.0v6 capris, one auto one manual, the auto was surprisingly good on fuel, mainly because it was doing 800rpm at 40mph :) it was cheaper to run than my 1300 mk2 escorts.

MK2 Escorts, had lots of these, including a few more rare models like the vomit inducing linnet, and the almost as bad 1300 sport (both in olympic blue). must have had 15 or more MK2's over the years. Many fitted with 2l engines in various spec, up to the group 4 rally car.

Minis including a MK3 cooper, which I took back to a bare shell had it resprayed, and then lost my garage so had to sell the car :(.

Skodas, S110R and Rapid.

Opel Kader 1.6sr (mk1 astra shape)

One day if I had the space Id quite fancy getting an old v6 zodiac or something similiar, preferably with a bench seat in the front :).
